MediaMarkt.de is currently offering the Asus ROG Ally RC71L-NH001W for €599, positioning the Windows-based handheld as a discounted alternative in a market shaped by the Steam Deck’s success. Notebookcheck says the model it tested earned a “Sehr Gut (88%)” rating, reflecting a strong overall result for Asus’s first major entry in the category.
At its core is AMD’s Ryzen Z1 Extreme, a Phoenix-generation chip built on Zen 4 architecture. Asus pairs the eight-core, 16-thread processor with Radeon 780M graphics, 16GB of LPDDR5X-6400 memory and a 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD in the compact M.2 2230 format. The memory is soldered and cannot be upgraded, although the storage can be replaced with a larger drive of the same size.
The device uses a 7-inch IPS display with a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, variable refresh rate support and FreeSync Premium compatibility. Notebookcheck says the panel offers good colour reproduction and stable viewing angles, while brightness and contrast are acceptable rather than exceptional. That makes the Ally technically well equipped for fast-paced games, especially where smoother frame delivery matters more than absolute resolution.
Tom’s Hardware’s review found the Z1 Extreme model generally stronger than Valve’s Steam Deck when connected to mains power, although the advantage narrows on battery. Its reporting on Asus benchmark data also showed a clear performance gap between the Z1 Extreme and the slower standard Ryzen Z1 version in games such as Elden Ring, Cyberpunk 2077 and Forza Horizon 5. The Ally ships with Windows 11 Home, but SteamOS support is already available in beta, and that could matter for buyers looking for a lighter, more console-like software experience.
