ASUS unveils the world's first 18-inch 4K 240Hz mini-LED gaming laptop with flagship specs

ASUS has opened pre-orders for the 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18, featuring a groundbreaking 18-inch 4K 240Hz mini-LED display and high-end hardware aimed at enthusiasts seeking desktop-level performance on the go.

ASUS has started taking pre-orders for the 2026 ROG Strix SCAR 18, a large-format gaming laptop aimed at buyers who want desktop-class performance in a transportable machine. The model is due to arrive on August 11 and arrives with the kind of specification stack that places it at the top end of the gaming laptop market.

At the heart of the machine is support for up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 Laptop GPU. ASUS says the system is built around a 320W total power envelope, which is unusually high for a notebook and is intended to sustain heavy gaming, creative work and AI-related tasks without throttling under prolonged load. The company also says the laptop uses tool-less access for upgrades, a practical touch for users who want to expand storage or memory later.

The display is the most notable change. ASUS is using what it describes as the world’s first 18-inch 4K 240Hz mini-LED laptop panel, part of its ROG Nebula range. The panel includes more than 2,000 dimming zones, peak brightness of 1,600 nits and full DCI-P3 colour coverage. ASUS also says the screen uses anti-glare and low-reflection coating to improve contrast, while a new ROG Nebula ELMB mode is designed to improve motion clarity without cutting brightness or adaptive refresh support.

Early coverage from Tom’s Hardware and other outlets suggests the machine performs as advertised, but its size, weight and price will likely keep it in a narrow audience. Even so, the SCAR 18 is clearly intended as a no-compromise flagship rather than a mainstream gaming laptop. For buyers who want the fastest possible mobile parts and a very high-end panel in one chassis, it is one of the most aggressive designs ASUS has released.
