Canon has unveiled the EOS R8 Mark II, a lightweight full-frame mirrorless camera that introduces advanced stabilisation, upgraded autofocus, and innovative 3D imaging features, targeting hybrid users seeking portable yet high-performance shooting options.
Canon has unveiled the EOS R8 Mark II, a full-frame mirrorless camera that sits between the EOS R8 and EOS R6 Mark II in its range. According to Canon’s newsroom announcement, it is the lightest full-frame EOS model to include in-body image stabilisation, and it keeps the compact, travel-friendly approach of the original R8 while addressing one of that model’s biggest omissions. The body weighs about 499g, or 546g with battery and card fitted, and is slightly larger than the first R8 but still smaller than the R6 Mark II. Fotografi Digitali said the design borrows sharper lines from older Canon film-era bodies, while the grip has a more pronounced texture and an angled cut inspired by the EOS 650.
The camera pairs a 24.2-megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with Canon’s DIGIC X processor. Canon says the new sensor-shift IBIS system delivers up to 7.5 stops of coordinated compensation when used with stabilised RF lenses, giving the R8 Mark II a much stronger case for handheld stills and video in poor light. The rear controls have also been revised, with a multi-controller added for quicker adjustments and a single dial handling power and video mode switching. Retail listings from B&H Photo Video confirm the same sensor, processor and control layout.
Autofocus remains a key focus. Canon says the Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system uses deep-learning subject recognition for people, animals and vehicles, with tracking designed to stay locked even if the subject briefly leaves the frame. The company also claims a low-light focusing sensitivity down to EV -7.5. The camera can shoot at up to 40 frames per second with the electronic shutter, with a RAW burst buffer of 73 frames, and it includes a pre-capture mode that stores 20 frames before the shutter is fully pressed. A register-people function can prioritise up to 10 saved faces.
Video specifications are similarly ambitious for a body of this size. Canon says the EOS R8 Mark II records 4K at up to 60p using 6K oversampling, while Full HD capture reaches 180fps for slow motion. The camera supports Canon Log 3, HLG, custom picture profiles, LUT loading and Movie Digital IS, and it adds Filmtone colour filters aimed at night lighting. B&H Photo Video lists 10-bit internal recording and Canon Log 3 among the headline video features, underlining the model’s pitch to hybrid users.
Canon is also introducing a new Dual Pixel 3D workflow, which it says uses the sensor’s split-pixel structure to extract depth data and produce 3D images or 3D models. The company says the desktop Dual Pixel 3D Converter for Windows will be available from 3 October 2026 and will export OBJ and GLB files. Connectivity includes HDMI, USB-C at up to 10Gbps, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3, along with support for image.canon and Canon Camera Connect. Canon will sell the camera body alone or in a kit with the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM, while an optional EG-E2 grip and a new Speedlite EL-5 V2 expand the system around it.
