Google unveils the Pixel Watch 5, emphasising improved GPS, expanded health monitoring, and smarter AI features, marking a notable step forward in its premium smartwatch line, despite maintaining its familiar design.
Google’s Pixel Watch 5 is a more capable sports and health smartwatch than its predecessor, but it is still an incremental update rather than a full redesign. Android Central reported that Google unveiled the device on August 12, 2026, keeping the same domed AMOLED design in 41mm and 45mm sizes while moving to a new Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor, 64GB of storage and Wear OS 7 with Gemini Intelligence. The result is a watch that looks familiar yet promises faster performance, more AI-driven personalisation and stronger fitness tracking.
Its most notable advance is GPS accuracy. Hands-on testing reported by DC Rainmaker and Tom’s Guide suggests Google has put real effort into improving location tracking for runners, cyclists and hikers, especially in cities where tall buildings can distort signals. Google is also said to be using map data and post-processing to clean up route and distance readings after a workout ends. That should make the watch more dependable for everyday use, although the same reports note that Garmin’s top outdoor models may still hold an edge in the harshest terrain.
The health package is broader as well. Android Central and Tom’s Guide say Google has grouped the new tools under a Health Guardian banner, with features that include Blood Pressure Trends, Insulin Resistance monitoring, sleep breathing quality checks and a Smart Wake Alarm. The watch also adds more advanced workout support, including HIIT and weightlifting tracking, plus AI-generated watch faces and smarter text replies. Google’s support material for its Pixel Watch line shows how central health and activity monitoring have become to the product strategy, with features such as heart rate, ECG and sleep tracking already forming part of the wider ecosystem.
There is a catch: the improvements come with a higher asking price. Android Central reported starting prices of $399 for the 41mm Bluetooth model and $429 for the 45mm version, with LTE variants costing about $100 more, while a Stephen Curry Edition is priced at $579. The same report said the watch keeps battery life broadly similar to the previous generation, although charging is faster. Even so, for buyers who value precise GPS, richer health data and Google’s expanding software features, the Pixel Watch 5 looks like a more serious contender in the premium smartwatch market than any Pixel Watch before it.
