Google set to disrupt flagship line with Pixel 11's advanced chip and fresh design features

Google’s Made by Google event on August 12 promises a mix of modest design updates and groundbreaking tech, notably the first phones with TSMC’s 2nm Tensor chip and the new Pixel Glow lighting feature, signalling a disruptive shift in its flagship series.

Google’s Made by Google event on August 12 is shaping up as one of the company’s most unusual hardware launches in years. Smartworld said the presentation is set for late in the evening in Italy, while Android Central noted that the livestream is scheduled for 6pm ET in New York. The show is expected to be hosted by Trevor Noah, which gives the event a more entertainment-led tone than a standard product briefing. Google has also set pre-order timing in a way that suggests many of the details may be public before the event begins.

The main focus is expected to be the Pixel 11 family, which is reported to include the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL and Pixel 11 Pro Fold. Tom’s Guide and PhoneArena both describe the design as largely familiar, with only modest changes over the current generation. The most visible addition appears to be a new light feature near the camera bar, called HiLight or Pixel Glow depending on the source, which Google appears to be using for alerts, contacts and Gemini interactions.

Under the surface, the biggest technical change should be Tensor G6, which multiple reports say will move to TSMC’s 2nm process. If accurate, that would make the Pixel 11 the first phone shipped with such a chip, at least for a short time before Apple’s next Pro iPhones arrive. Android Central says the base storage is likely to start at 256GB, but that this may come with a less welcome trade-off: the Pixel 11 Pro is expected to ship with 12GB of RAM rather than 16GB. Some reports also point to pricing pressure, with Google itself having already signalled higher prices because of the memory market.

The Pixel Watch 5 is also expected to arrive, but the upgrade looks more restrained. Smartworld and Android Central both suggest the watch will keep the same overall design language and the familiar 41mm and 45mm sizes, with battery life staying at roughly 30 hours and 40 hours respectively. The clearest hardware improvement is said to be 64GB of storage, double the previous capacity. Marketing material cited by MyMobiles places heavy emphasis on Gemini Intelligence, which is described as a more proactive assistant for messages and notifications.

Google is also expected to use the event to introduce the Pixel Tag, its first Bluetooth tracker and a direct rival to Apple’s AirTag. 9to5Google’s reporting suggests an oval design and support for Android’s Find Hub network, previously known as Find My Device. By contrast, Pixel Buds Pro 2 appear to be receiving only a cosmetic refresh, with a new olive colour rather than a new model. Google has reportedly kept next-generation laptops and Android XR glasses for later in the year, which makes this launch feel more like a careful update cycle than a sweeping reset.
