Google’s Fitbit Edge brings ECG and GPS to a seven-day fitness tracker

The $179.99 Fitbit Edge adds a bright AMOLED display, advanced health tracking and built-in GPS while keeping the lighter profile of a fitness band.

Google has added a screened alternative to its lighter, screenless Fitbit Air, unveiling the Fitbit Edge as a mid-range fitness tracker that sits below the Pixel Watch but offers more than a basic band. According to Google’s announcement, the device is already available for pre-order and will go on sale on Tuesday, 27 October, at a price of 2万6800円 in Japan, or $179.99 in the US. It is compatible with iOS 16.4 and later, and Android 11 and later.

The selling point is a compact body that still manages to feel close to a simple band rather than a full smartwatch. Google says the Fitbit Edge weighs 17.7g without the strap and lasts up to seven days on a charge. Its 1.34-inch vertical AMOLED display is designed to keep everyday information visible at a glance, including steps, weather and workout data, while richer health metrics are available through tiles that let users move quickly between screens. TechRadar described the screen as the brightest and largest ever fitted to a Fitbit, with a hybrid OLED panel that is meant to remain readable in strong light.

Google is also pushing the Edge as a health-focused wearable rather than a pared-back notification device. The company says it supports continuous heart-rate tracking, sleep analysis, irregular heart rhythm notifications, AFib detection and an ECG app, alongside skin temperature, SpO2 and menstrual cycle tracking. Built-in GPS adds route tracking for outdoor exercise, while the companion software offers workout views, readiness and cardio load summaries, and automatic recognition for as many as 100 exercise types. The device also works with Google Maps, call and message alerts, and media controls, bringing some smartwatch-style functions into a smaller form factor.

Material choices and repairability are part of the pitch as well. Google says the casing is made from recycled aluminium, while the battery uses recycled cobalt and lithium, and the packaging is plastic-free. The watch ships with a silicone strap in small and large sizes, and Google is offering additional bands, including magnetic and metal options. Colour combinations include Satin Pyrite with Olive, Matte Black with Obsidian, Satin Silver with Fog and Champagne Gold with Canyon. TechRadar noted that the physical side button and replaceable battery are intended to make the Edge more practical for users who want durability and easier servicing without moving to a heavier smartwatch.
