Guide unveils MobIR 3.0, a rugged smartphone thermal camera with AI features

Guide has launched MobIR 3.0, a new series of thermal camera attachments for smartphones, boasting increased resolution, rugged design, and AI-driven inspection tools for trades and technical professionals.

Guide has unveiled MobIR 3.0, a new range of thermal camera attachments designed to turn iOS and Android smartphones into inspection tools. The Chinese manufacturer says the series is aimed at trades and technical users working in building diagnostics, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, automotive fault-finding and electronics testing.

The line-up includes three models. The ES2+ combines thermal imaging with visible-light capture, while the ES2 and ES1 rely on infrared sensing alone. Guide says image-processing improvements raise the effective resolutions from 256×192 to 512×384, and from 120×90 to 480×360 on the lower-end models. The company also claims a thermal sensitivity of up to 15 millikelvins, a figure that would allow the detection of very small temperature differences if borne out in independent testing.

According to Guide, the devices measure temperatures from -20C to 550C, with an advertised accuracy of plus or minus 2C. The ES2+ adds multiple combined infrared and visible modes intended to make heat sources easier to identify. The cameras connect to phones through USB-C and work with the FocusIR app, which includes measurement, analysis and inspection-management functions, together with an AI-based assistant.

Guide says the hardware is built with a metal housing, a two-metre drop rating and IP54 protection against dust and splashes. That positions MobIR 3.0 as a more rugged successor to earlier smartphone thermal accessories such as the MobIR Air, which Guide previously marketed with a far lower 120×90 infrared resolution and a narrower temperature range. As with any manufacturer-stated performance claims, the practical value of the new series will depend on independent verification under real-world conditions.
