Honor's Robot Phone features motorised camera arm and cinematic imaging partnership

Honor is set to unveil its groundbreaking Robot Phone, boasting a motorised camera arm and advanced imaging capabilities developed in collaboration with ARRI, signalling a new era of mobile photography and industrial design.

Honor is preparing to unveil its Robot Phone next week, a device that has drawn attention less for conventional smartphone design than for a motorised camera arm that turns part of the handset into a moving imaging system. According to Huawei Central, the concept is intended to replace the standard rear camera bump with a more elaborate robotic module, giving the phone a mechanical signature unlike that of mainstream flagships.

The clearest specification so far is the camera array. Gizmochina reported that Honor has confirmed a 200-megapixel main sensor with a 1/1.28-inch format and f/1.6 aperture, mounted on a three-axis gimbal, alongside a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens. Android Authority separately said the system also includes video stability modes, subject tracking and LOGC3 support, suggesting Honor is positioning the device as a serious mobile imaging tool rather than a novelty.

That effort is being backed by a collaboration with ARRI, the German cinema equipment maker. In a press release, ARRI said the partnership is aimed at bringing its cinematic image science into Honor’s consumer devices, starting with the Robot Phone. Honor’s own imaging hardware is also expected to play a role, with reports pointing to a self-developed image signal processor called Yuguang H1 working with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform.

Design appears to be another major selling point. Huawei Central described the handset as compact, despite the complexity of its motorised camera assembly, and said it will use a 6.3-inch LTPO flat display with 2,640 x 1,216 resolution, 6,800-nit peak brightness and an anti-reflective coating. That combination, if accurate, suggests Honor is trying to balance portability with a high-end panel more often associated with premium larger phones.

Battery capacity may also be unusually high for a device of this size. Huawei Central said the Robot Phone is expected to pack a 7,060mAh battery with 120W wired charging. If that specification holds, it would help offset the power demands of the motorised camera system and the bright display, both of which are likely to appeal most to users who value photography, video capture and unusual industrial design.
