Honor has launched its Robot Phone in China, featuring a pioneering titanium-based gimbal camera system with advanced tracking, cinematic video capabilities, and robotic gestures, marking a significant leap in flagship smartphone innovation
Honor has launched its Robot Phone in China, bringing a concept once presented as a teaser into a shipping product with an unusual moving camera module at its core. According to MyMobileIndia, the handset is built around a titanium-based gimbal system that gives the main camera physical movement for tracking and framing, making it closer in concept to a pocket-sized stabilised camera than a conventional smartphone.
The central camera uses a 200-megapixel sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and sits inside what Honor describes as a 4D gimbal mechanism. The company says the assembly required more than 100 precision parts and over 60 manufacturing steps. It also claims the system is the smallest of its kind in the industry, with voice control, AI subject tracking and auto-framing designed for video calls, livestreaming and vlogging. The moving module can also react with animated gestures, which gives the device a more obviously robotic identity.
Honor has expanded the camera package with a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera. MyMobileIndia reports that the phone also marks the first release from Honor’s partnership with ARRI, the German cinema equipment maker, with support for Log-C3 video encoding, on-device LUT colour grading and a cinema mode aimed at matching ARRI-style image processing. That positioning suggests Honor is targeting creators as well as buyers drawn to novelty hardware.
The rest of the specification sheet is firmly flagship grade. The Robot Phone uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, a 6.3-inch LTPO OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 7,060mAh battery with 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, according to the company’s launch details. It goes on sale in China on August 18, starting at CNY 9,999 for the 12GB and 512GB model. Honor has not yet said when, or if, the device will reach other markets.
