Honor’s Robot Phone redefines mobile videography with cinema-grade imaging and hardware innovations

Honour’s new Robot Phone blurs the line between smartphones and professional camera rigs, featuring a custom imaging chip, cinema-grade colour science, and a built-in gimbal , signalling a disruptive shift in mobile video creation.

Honor’s Robot Phone has been presented as a rare attempt to make a smartphone behave more like a compact film rig. The device combines a motorised gimbal, a high-end camera array and a custom imaging pipeline built with ARRI, the German cinema specialist, because Honor says Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 was not enough for professional-grade video processing.

At the centre of that approach is the Honor Imaging Chip H1, a dedicated image signal processor designed to handle real-time adjustments such as white balance, tone mapping and exposure control on the device itself. According to TechRadar, the chip also supports ARRI LogC3 capture and ARRI Wide Gamut 3 colour science, giving the phone a workflow closer to professional cameras than conventional handsets. Honor has paired the H1 with its C1 modem for improved radio performance and the E2 power chip for battery management.

The company has also tied the Robot Phone’s imaging system to a 200-megapixel main camera with a physically stabilised sensor, while other reports say the phone uses a triple-camera setup that includes a 200-megapixel telephoto lens and a 50-megapixel ultrawide camera. Android Central reported that Honor has positioned the device for creators, with AI-assisted subject tracking, gesture controls and voice-based framing through its YOYO system. The phone also appears to be aimed squarely at the Chinese market, with launch pricing starting at RMB 9,999.

That ambition comes with obvious engineering trade-offs. Android Central and Tom’s Guide both noted that the mechanical camera assembly makes the phone more complex than a standard flagship, and early hands-on reports mentioned heat build-up during longer recording sessions. Even so, the broader significance of the Robot Phone is clear: Honor is no longer treating mobile video as a software problem alone, but as a hardware challenge that demands its own processor, its own optics and, in ARRI’s case, cinema-grade expertise.
