Huawei launches Nova 16 SE with large battery and premium features at an entry-level price in China

Huawei has unveiled the Nova 16 SE, an affordable yet feature-rich smartphone in its Nova 16 series, offering a high-capacity battery, advanced display, and connectivity options designed to appeal to budget-conscious consumers in China.

Huawei has put the Nova 16 SE on sale in China, pricing the handset as the entry-level model in its Nova 16 family. According to IXBT News, the phone arrived a week after its presentation and starts at about $350 in the Chinese market, with subsidies reducing the effective cost further in some configurations. Huawei’s broader Nova 16 line already includes the Nova 16, Nova 16 Pro, Nova 16 Ultra and Nova 16z.

The Nova 16 SE uses a 6.84-inch OLED screen with a 2,756 x 1,272 pixel resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Huawei says the panel can reach a peak brightness of 8,000 nits and uses 2,160Hz PWM dimming, a high-frequency flicker reduction method that can make low-brightness viewing more comfortable for some users. Power comes from the Kirin 8020, a 5G-capable chip also seen in the Nova 16z.

Camera hardware is modest by Huawei’s recent standards, but still unusually ambitious for a cheaper model. The rear system centres on a 50-megapixel RYYB sensor with a 1/1.56-inch optical format, paired with Huawei’s Red Maple multispectral sensor for more accurate colour capture. A 32-megapixel front camera handles selfies. The biggest specification is the 8,500mAh battery, which supports 66W wired charging and gives the phone a clear endurance-first positioning.

Huawei is also leaning on connectivity and software features to separate the model from rival mid-range phones. The Nova 16 SE supports two-way BeiDou satellite communication and runs HarmonyOS 6.1. It is offered in Starry Black, Cherry Blossom Sky, Sky White and Dawn Orange, with storage options of 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. At 229g and 7.98mm thick, it is not especially light, but it fits the trend in China towards large-battery phones that trade portability for stamina. International availability has not been announced.
