Huawei launches the MateBook Pro S with a revolutionary privacy display and a lightweight chassis weighing just 798 grams, challenging rivals from Apple and Samsung in portable computing.
Huawei has positioned the MateBook Pro S as an extreme example of portable computing, claiming a chassis weight of just 798 grammes and setting it against thin-and-light rivals from Apple and Samsung. The more notable change, however, is not the size of the machine but the introduction of a privacy display that Huawei says is appearing in one of its laptops for the first time.
According to Huawei’s product material, the machine uses a 14.2-inch flexible OLED panel with a 3.1K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate and a 93% screen-to-body ratio. The company says the panel is designed for strong colour accuracy and bright output, with peak brightness reaching 1,000 nits on some related MateBook models, while TÜV Rheinland Eye Comfort certification is intended to reduce glare during long sessions at the screen.
The privacy system is the key technical feature. Huawei says the display uses Smart Shield technology and a dual-pixel design that lets the panel switch between a normal viewing mode and a privacy mode. When the device detects a nearby person looking from the side, it can prompt the user to enable privacy protection, darkening the edges of the screen so content is harder to read from oblique angles. In practice, the system is meant to reduce the risk of shoulder-surfing in offices, cafés and other shared spaces.
The concept builds on hardware-level privacy screens already familiar from add-on protectors, which typically narrow viewing angles to about 30 degrees, but Huawei is attempting to integrate that function into the display itself rather than relying on software alone. The approach fits a broader pattern in Huawei’s laptop range, which also includes HarmonyOS integration, fast charging, multi-speaker audio and lightweight cooling designs on related MateBook models. That gives the MateBook Pro S a clear product message: portability first, but with a stronger emphasis on privacy than most mainstream notebooks.
