Huawei launches its Pura 90s series in South Africa, featuring a 200MP telephoto camera, 5G connectivity, and advanced imaging capabilities aimed at photography enthusiasts and mobile users seeking high performance.
Huawei’s Pura 90s series has arrived in South Africa with a clear pitch: pair high-end photography with faster mobile connectivity. The company says the range brings 5G back to its local flagship line, alongside a camera system built around distant subjects, quick sharing and everyday responsiveness. The launch also fits into Huawei’s wider international rollout of the Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max, which the company introduced in Kuala Lumpur on 14 July 2026 for markets beyond China, according to Tech-ISH.
The flagship emphasis is on the Pura 90s Pro Max, which Huawei says uses a 200MP ultra-large sensor telephoto camera and a 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor to preserve detail at long range. That is the core of the company’s Master Zoom message. In practical terms, it is meant to help with wildlife, sports and concert photography, where distance usually limits quality. Huawei also says the phone supports 20x telephoto video recording and uses image stabilisation to improve handheld footage.
The imaging package goes beyond resolution. Huawei says the Pura 90s series adds its True-to-Colour Camera 2.0 system, which improves colour accuracy and expands the colour gamut. It also includes AI features such as framing guidance, glare reduction and background reconstruction when subjects are moved or duplicated. Reviewers have generally backed the camera-first approach. Digital Camera World described the Pura 90s Pro Max as strong on image quality, reliable exposure and detailed macro work, though it noted weaker support for Google services and fewer AI editing tools for international users.
That does not mean the hardware is beyond criticism. Forbes said the Pura 90s Pro Max may not represent a major advance over the Pura 80 Ultra, even if the device remains powerful. Notebookcheck and other launch reports also highlight that Huawei has split the series into the Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max, with the larger model carrying the 200MP telephoto unit while the Pro version uses a different camera layout. Gizguide said the Pro model also comes in a broader range of bright finishes, including Guava Soda, Orange Soda, Coconut White and Mulberry Black.
Huawei is also leaning on battery life, charging speed and durability to round out the package. The company says the series uses a 6,000mAh battery, with 66W SuperCharge on the Pura 90s Pro and 100W on the Pro Max. It also says the Pro Max includes anti-reflection, scratch-resistant Kunlun Glass that reduces glare and improves outdoor visibility. In South Africa, the phones are being sold through select retailers, Huawei Experience Stores, operators and the company’s online store, with pricing starting at R19,999 or from R849 a month over 36 months.
