Huawei launches the Pura 90s series in South Africa, emphasising rapid reaction and advanced zoom capabilities with AI-powered features designed for fleeting moments rather than staged shots.
Huawei’s Pura 90s series is being pitched as a camera phone for fleeting moments rather than carefully staged shots. In South Africa, the company is emphasising its “Now is Your Moment” message, arguing that the real challenge in smartphone photography is not taking a picture, but reacting quickly enough when the scene changes. The Pura 90s Pro and Pura 90s Pro Max are positioned around that idea, with imaging hardware and software meant to handle distance, shifting light and last-second composition.
The Pro Max centres on a 200MP Ultra Large Sensor Telephoto Camera using a 1/1.28-inch RYYB sensor and a 3-in-1 Ultra Lighting Prism. Huawei says it supports 4x optical zoom and extends to 20x ultra-telephoto video, while CIPA 7.0 stabilisation is intended to keep images usable when the photographer is shooting from far away. Independent coverage of the global launch has described the telephoto system as an industry-first in this class, underlining how strongly Huawei is leaning on zoom performance as a differentiator.
The company is also putting unusual emphasis on how the phone handles light. The Pro Max includes an Ultra Lighting HDR Camera, which is meant to preserve detail in both highlights and shadows when conditions change quickly, such as at concerts, indoors or during sunset shots. Huawei also says True-to-Colour Camera 2.0 improves colour accuracy by 43% and expands colour gamut processing by 34% versus the previous generation, a claim that is aimed less at spectacle than at keeping scenes looking believable when lighting becomes difficult.
Artificial intelligence is woven into the camera process before and after capture. Huawei says AI Composition can suggest framing and camera angle while the user is still preparing the shot, shifting guidance into the live shooting experience rather than leaving it to editing. After capture, tools such as AI De-glare, AI Move and AI Best Expression are designed to correct reflections, reposition subjects and fix awkward facial expressions in group shots. That approach reflects a wider trend in phone photography: the handset is no longer only recording the moment, but also helping to manage its imperfections.
Power and durability have been scaled to match the imaging hardware. Both the Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max carry a 6,000mAh battery, with 66W wired charging on the Pro and 100W on the Pro Max, plus wireless charging on both models. Huawei also says the Pro Max uses Anti-Reflection and Scratch-Resistant Kunlun Glass that can cut reflections by up to 70%, a practical benefit for outdoor viewing in bright conditions. In South Africa, the 5G series is being sold through selected retailers, Huawei Experience Stores, operators and the company’s online store, with prices starting at R19,999 or from R849 a month over 36 months.
