Early teardowns suggest Apple’s first foldable is easier to service than expected, with removable batteries and a modular charging port , but damage to the inner display could still cost up to $1,499.
Apple’s first foldable handset is already giving repair watchers plenty to talk about, with the earliest teardowns suggesting a device that is more serviceable than many expected, but still dominated by one costly vulnerability. According to early videos from Phone Repair Guru and REWA Technology, the iPhone Duo uses two battery cells rather than one, with a combined capacity of 4,883mAh, and Apple has secured them with electrically released adhesive that appears to make removal relatively straightforward.
The split battery layout is one of the more practical choices inside the phone. One cell is rated at 2,962mAh and the other at 1,921mAh, and the teardown shows the handset can keep running if either battery is disconnected on its own. That should matter in repair scenarios, because it suggests a partial battery failure would not automatically take the whole device offline. Apple’s own published documentation, as reported by Cinco Días, also points to a 4,883mAh total battery design across markets, alongside an EU energy label that gives the phone an A rating and a repairability grade of C.
Another notable change is the charging port. The iPhone Duo appears to use a fully modular USB-C assembly, fixed with two T4 screws, which would be unusual for an iPhone and should reduce the difficulty of replacing a worn port. The teardown also shows stereo speakers, a 12-megapixel Centre Stage camera for the outer screen, and a compact single-layer logic board carrying the A20 Pro chip and 12GB of RAM. By contrast with the more modular pieces, the combined power button and Touch ID sensor remains awkward to remove, and the inner folding display is still the component most likely to cause major expense if damaged.
That cost is the larger issue hanging over the device. MacRumors reported that Apple’s U.S. repair pricing for the iPhone Duo sets inner display damage at $999 and “other damage” at as much as $1,499 without AppleCare+, while battery service is listed at $229. In Canada, the figures cited in the teardown coverage are even starker, with other damage priced at $2,249 and the inner display at $1,499, against a starting price of $2,999 unlocked. The repair-focused YouTube host concluded that the foldable’s internal design is encouraging in parts, but the display assembly remains expensive and difficult enough to blunt some of the benefit. A fuller assessment from iFixit, including a repairability score, is expected shortly.
