Microsoft has unveiled revamped Surface Pro and Surface Laptop models featuring Snapdragon X2 Plus chips, emphasising improved AI capabilities, battery life, and connectivity options, including a 12-inch tablet and 13-inch laptop designed for enhanced productivity and local AI processing.
Microsoft has refreshed its Surface line with two compact Windows PCs built around Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 Plus chip: the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch. According to Microsoft’s official blog, both devices are aimed at improving everyday productivity while also pushing more artificial intelligence work on to the device itself, rather than relying on the cloud. The company says the new models deliver up to 17% better performance in Office applications, up to 18% improved battery efficiency, more than 60% stronger graphics performance and as much as 95% faster local AI processing than the previous generation.
The Surface Pro 12-inch remains the more flexible of the two, functioning as a tablet with optional keyboard and stylus support. Microsoft has given it a 12-inch PixelSense touchscreen that is 25% brighter than before and reaches 500 nits, while also adding an optional 5G variant for users who need constant connectivity. The device will ship with either 16GB or 24GB of memory and 256GB or 512GB of storage, with US pricing starting at $1,149. Several reports, including Tom’s Hardware and Windows Central, said the company is positioning the model as a lower-cost entry point into its new Arm-based Surface range.
The Surface Laptop 13-inch follows the same design direction but with a conventional clamshell layout. Microsoft says its 13-inch PixelSense display, also rated at 500 nits, is 25% brighter than the earlier model. Battery life is a key selling point: the company claims up to 22.5 hours of local video playback, which would place it among the longest-lasting laptops in the current Surface family. Pricing begins at $1,199 in the US, and the machine will also be sold with 16GB or 24GB of memory and up to 512GB of storage.
Alongside the computers, Microsoft introduced a new Surface Mouse with haptic feedback, a customisable Copilot button and Bluetooth 6.0 support. The company is also using the launch to highlight Microsoft Ink Canvas, an AI-assisted note-taking and drawing app designed for pen input. According to Microsoft, the broader package is intended to show how local AI features can be built into mainstream PCs without sacrificing battery life or portability. The new Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch are due to reach customers from 13 October, with European pricing starting at €1,259 and €1,319 respectively in Germany, though availability and pricing will vary by market.
