Nubia’s newly launched A77 5G in Malaysia combines modest hardware with advanced AI software tools, challenging typical budget phones with innovative features and competitive pricing.
ZTE’s nubia has brought the A77 5G to Malaysia, pitching it as a low-cost handset that leans heavily on on-device AI features. The phone is built around Unisoc’s T8300 Ultimate chip, runs Android 16 and is positioned as a budget model with a long list of software tools intended to make everyday tasks, messaging and calls more convenient.
The hardware package is modest but broadly competitive for its segment. The T8300 is a 6nm octa-core processor with two Cortex-A78 performance cores and six Cortex-A55 efficiency cores, a layout Unisoc says is designed to balance speed and power use. It is paired with 6GB of RAM, expandable to 8GB through dynamic memory, and 128GB of storage, with microSD support up to 2TB. nubia has also highlighted SGS certification for sustained performance over 50 months, alongside a side-mounted fingerprint sensor and IP64 protection against dust and splashes.
Display and battery specifications follow the usual budget playbook, though with a few useful extras. The A77 5G uses a 6.75-inch HD+ waterdrop panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, Wet and Oily Hand Touch support and a 5,000mAh battery with 22.5W charging. There is also bypass charging, which sends power directly to the device during gaming to reduce heat. Imaging is handled by a 50MP main camera, a 13MP secondary rear camera and an 8MP front camera.
Much of the marketing focus falls on software. nubia says the phone includes AI Translate, AI Memory for saving on-screen content with a three-finger pinch, AI Social Publisher for caption generation, AI Smart Reply, AI Wallpaper, AI Noise Reduction and AI Clearcall, as well as scam detection for calls and messages. Google’s Circle to Search is included too. The device arrives in Obsidian Black with a 6GB/128GB configuration priced at RM1,099, and will be sold through Unifi Store outlets nationwide, with Maxis availability due by the end of the month. In a market where OPPO previously sold an unrelated A77 5G at a similar price point, nubia is clearly trying to stand out by packing in more software features rather than chasing higher-end hardware. Unisoc’s own specifications for the T8300 suggest the chip is capable of FHD+ panels at 120Hz, UFS 2.2 storage and gaming-focused enhancements, which helps explain the A77 5G’s positioning as an entry-level phone with some unusually ambitious claims.
