RedMAGIC has unveiled the Astra 2, a compact Android gaming tablet featuring a 9.06-inch 2.4K OLED display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, and liquid cooling technology, aiming to deliver laptop-like performance in a handheld device from August 26.
REDMAGIC has expanded its gaming hardware line-up with the Astra 2, a compact Android tablet aimed squarely at players who want laptop-style performance in a handheld format. According to the company’s launch page, the device goes on early-bird sale from August 10 to 25, with the wider global open sale beginning on August 26. Pricing starts at $699 for the 12GB and 256GB model, rising to $799 for the 16GB and 512GB version. Notebookcheck also reported that early buyers can secure an 80W power adapter as part of the launch offers.
At the centre of the Astra 2 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, paired with REDMAGIC’s RedCore R4 gaming chip. The company says the combination is designed to improve rendering, touch response and overall system efficiency, while also supporting 2K super-resolution features and heavier in-game effects. Android Central described the tablet as a notable upgrade over its predecessor, pointing to the same core idea: sustained high-end gaming rather than general-purpose tablet use.
The display is one of the device’s main selling points. REDMAGIC says the Astra 2 uses a 9.06-inch 2.4K OLED panel with a 2400 x 1504 resolution, a 185Hz refresh rate and peak brightness of up to 1,600 nits. MegaMobileContent and Gizguide both reported that the panel is tuned for fast response, with Gizguide adding that the global model uses an LTPO OLED screen and a high touch sampling rate aimed at reducing input delay in games.
REDMAGIC is also leaning heavily on cooling. The company says the tablet uses liquid cooling technology, a large vapour chamber and a network of micro-channels to move heat away from the processor during long play sessions. That matters because thermal throttling, when a device slows itself to avoid overheating, can reduce frame rates and responsiveness. The battery is similarly built for endurance, with an 8,300mAh dual-cell pack and support for fast charging.
Beyond gaming, the Astra 2 includes features that make it more flexible than a single-purpose device. REDMAGIC says it runs REDMAGIC OS 11.5 based on Android 16 and includes a 13MP rear camera, a 9MP front camera, fingerprint and facial recognition, dual USB-C ports and DisplayPort output for use with external monitors. The company also highlights stereo speakers, haptic feedback motors and RGB lighting, all wrapped in a metal-bodied design with visible cooling elements.
