Samsung releases the Galaxy Watch9, featuring a bigger battery and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite processor, positioning it as a powerful yet lighter alternative to the Ultra2, with performance upgrades that could redefine user expectations.
Samsung’s Galaxy Watch9 arrives in the shadow of the Galaxy Watch Ultra2, but it is not merely a lesser companion. According to Samsung and early coverage from GSM Arena, the standard model keeps the familiar design of the previous generation while adding two meaningful hardware changes: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite processor and a larger battery. The shift away from Samsung’s own Exynos silicon is notable because it brings the Watch9 into line with the Ultra2 on core platform choice.
The battery update is the clearest practical improvement. SamMobile reports that the 40mm model now uses a 390mAh cell, up from 325mAh, while the 44mm version rises only modestly from 435mAh to 445mAh. Samsung says the smaller model now has a 20% larger battery than the Galaxy Watch 8. In a category where endurance often limits usefulness, that increase should matter more than cosmetic changes.
The new chip may be just as important. Tech Advisor notes that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Wear Elite is intended to deliver much stronger CPU and graphics performance, alongside on-device AI capability through its Hexagon NPU. GSM Arena’s specification listing also points to a 3nm platform, which should help with efficiency as well as speed. For a smartwatch, that combination usually translates into smoother interface performance, quicker app response and less drain during day-to-day use.
Outside those upgrades, Samsung appears to have kept the formula largely intact. GSM Arena describes the same 1.34-inch display on the 40mm model and the same 1.47-inch panel on the 44mm version, with familiar sensors, an aluminium case and Sapphire Crystal protection. The company is also positioning the Watch9 as a more conventional alternative to the Ultra line: a smaller, lighter watch for users who want the latest platform without the bulk or specialist features of the flagship model.
