Samsung relaunches its flagship foldable with a slimmer profile, enhanced durability, and impressive early demand, signalling a new era for device practicality and user experience.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 arrives as a notable reset for the company’s most ambitious book-style foldable. Unveiled in London alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Flip8, it adopts a shorter, wider design that Samsung says is aimed at making the large-screen format easier to use for media and everyday tasks. Early demand has been strong: Samsung reported 1.44 million pre-orders for the Z8 series in the first week, a record for the company’s foldables, with the Fold 8 accounting for a large share of that total.
At 201g, the device is positioned as the lightest foldable in its class. It measures 4.5mm when open and 9.7mm when closed, giving it a notably slim profile for a handset with two displays. Samsung has also rated it IP48, which means it is built to withstand splashes, brief immersion in fresh water and the intrusion of small solid particles.
Inside, the Fold 8 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, a Samsung-tuned version of Qualcomm’s flagship chip. It is offered with up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, which should make it suitable for demanding multitasking, gaming and heavier productivity work. Samsung’s software support remains a major selling point too: the phone runs Android 17 with One UI 9.0 and is promised seven years of operating system and security updates.
The camera system is modest in count but broad in capability, with a 50-megapixel main camera and a 50-megapixel ultrawide unit. Samsung says the main camera includes optical image stabilisation, while the ultrawide lens supports steadier video capture through a horizontal lock mode. The company also highlights an AI-assisted My FanCam feature for tracking a subject in recorded clips, a function aimed at casual video use and content creation.
Display hardware remains central to the appeal. The outer screen is a 5.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a wide 10:16 aspect ratio, while the inner display is a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with the same refresh rate and a broader 4:3 shape. That layout gives the phone more room for split-screen work, with support for three apps at once plus a floating window. Samsung also includes DeX, which turns the handset into a desktop-style environment when connected to a display.
Power comes from a 4,800mAh silicon-carbon battery, paired with 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging. Samsung has also added Flex Titanium technology, combining titanium film and a titanium plate beneath the folding panel to reduce crease visibility and improve durability. In Malaysia, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at RM7,099, placing it firmly in premium territory even as Samsung seeks to make foldables feel less experimental and more practical.
