The Galaxy Z Fold8 proves more robust in durability tests, featuring enhanced dust resistance and hinge strength, signalling a maturation in Samsung’s foldable phone design suited for daily use.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has been put through an aggressive durability test by JerryRigEverything, and the early verdict is that the new foldable appears notably sturdier in the places that matter most. Zack Nelson’s test found that the handset resisted dust intrusion better than many foldables typically do, while the hinge held up under heavy bending pressure without the device giving way. That matters because the Fold8 has launched into a market where reviewers have been calling it one of Samsung’s most polished book-style foldables yet, with a lighter, more pocketable design and a starting price of $1,899. According to recent reviews, it weighs 201 grams, has a 5.5-inch cover display and a 7.6-inch main screen, and is aimed at users who want a thinner alternative to bulkier foldables.
The dust trial was the most telling part of the video. Foldable phones have long struggled with grime entering the hinge area, where repeated opening and closing can wear down moving parts. In this case, Nelson said the Fold8 did not show any major problems after exposure to fine debris, which is an encouraging sign for everyday use. Samsung has also positioned the phone as more robust on paper than earlier generations, with an IP48 rating for dust and water resistance and a hinge rated for 500,000 folds, according to Samsung’s own claims.
The screen tests produced the expected split result between the outer and inner panels. The cover display, protected by Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3, resisted scratches until around Mohs level 5, with more visible damage appearing at level 6 and deeper marks at level 7. By contrast, the inner panel remained vulnerable in the way most foldable displays are, since it uses a softer plastic-based surface that can be marked by keys or coins. Nelson also exposed the display to flame, which damaged the inner screen, although that is an extreme condition that most owners will never encounter.
Taken together, the tests and early reviews suggest the Galaxy Z Fold8 is a more mature foldable, not an indestructible one. The handset is being praised for its compact, passport-style shape, reduced crease visibility, strong Snapdragon 8 Elite performance and improved battery life from its 4,800mAh silicon-carbon cell. But reviewers have also pointed to compromises, including the absence of a telephoto camera, limited Flex Mode support and no S Pen support. The overall picture is of a foldable that is finally becoming practical for daily use, even if its inner display and moving parts still require more care than a conventional slab smartphone.
