It keeps the familiar tall outer shell and 8-inch inner screen that defined last year’s design, then adds more practical hardware for people who want a foldable to behave like a work device rather than a novelty. The result is a phone that is still expensive, but finally feels built around the demands of heavy use rather than compromise.
Samsung has not changed the size or shape much, but it has improved the materials inside the hinge and display assembly. That matters because the inner crease is less obvious than on previous generations and the folding action feels more polished. The company also says the phone uses a dual layer of titanium for added durability, while keeping the body thin enough to preserve the appeal of the original design. In water resistance terms, the Fold8 Ultra carries an IP48 rating, which means it is protected against limited dust ingress and short freshwater submersion, but it is not fully dustproof or waterproof.
Performance is another area where the Ultra earns its name. It uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, the same processor found across the latest Fold family and in Samsung’s top slab phone, but the larger screen lets it make far better use of that power. In practice, that means smooth multitasking, the ability to run several app windows at once and useful features such as Samsung DeX, which turns the phone into something closer to a desktop environment. Samsung pairs that with Android 17, One UI 9 and seven years of platform and security updates, a support promise that puts it in the same long-life bracket as Google’s best-supported phones.
The camera system is the most convincing of any foldable Samsung has made so far, though it still does not fully close the gap with a conventional flagship. The headline feature is a 200MP main camera, backed by a 50MP ultra-wide lens and a 10MP 3x telephoto camera. Independent testing by Android Central found the Fold8 Ultra outperformed the standard Fold8 in sharpness, colour and zoom quality, especially up to 10x, although longer-range zoom remained a weakness. TechRadar reached a similar conclusion, saying the Ultra’s camera hardware is stronger, but that the phone’s tall shape can make it less comfortable to carry and use than the standard Fold8.
Battery life is also stronger than before. Samsung says the Fold8 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery and supports 45W charging, while the business-focused version of the product line highlights the same battery capacity and Super Fast Charging 2.0. That combination should be enough for a full day of mixed use, including frequent switching between the outer and inner displays. For buyers, the choice now comes down to whether they want the more practical, easier-to-handle standard Fold8 or the Ultra’s extra power, better camera hardware and larger battery. For users who want the most capable folding phone in Samsung’s range, the answer is increasingly clear.
