Samsung appears to be launching an affordable Galaxy A18 with software typically reserved for higher-end devices, signalling a focus on delivering current updates on budget phones.
Samsung appears to be preparing an unusually cheap new handset that may arrive with software usually reserved for far more expensive phones. A listing on Geekbench, first spotted by El Androide Libre, points to a Galaxy A18 powered by MediaTek’s Helio G99, the same 6nm chip used in last year’s Galaxy A17. The benchmark entry also suggests 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for one variant, a modest specification set that underlines Samsung’s focus on keeping costs down.
The performance figures are unsurprising for an entry-level device. The Geekbench results show 744 points in single-core testing and 2,064 in multi-core, which is broadly in line with a budget phone rather than a premium model. The chip itself pairs two Cortex-A76 performance cores at 2.2GHz with six Cortex-A55 efficiency cores at 2.0GHz, alongside a Mali-G57 graphics processor. In other words, the hardware looks familiar and, by modern standards, plainly restrained.
What makes the Galaxy A18 notable is the software. The leak indicates that Samsung is testing it with One UI 9 on top of Android 17, which would make it one of the first low-cost phones to ship with the latest version of Samsung’s interface. PhoneArena said the stable version of One UI 9 launched on July 22, 2026, and added features such as a redesigned Samsung Internet browser with an “Ask AI” function, new Gallery tools and broader Galaxy AI refinements on supported devices. SamMobile and Gizmochina have also reported that Samsung is broadening One UI 9 development to a wide range of phones, including budget models.
That could give Samsung a clear marketing edge. Rather than trying to win on raw hardware, the company may present the A18 as an affordable route to current software, newer security features and a longer update window. SamMobile reported that the Galaxy A18 is expected to launch around August 2026, while El Androide Libre suggests the phone may arrive in both 4G and 5G versions, likely in September or October if Samsung follows its usual refresh pattern. If accurate, the A18 would fit a wider Samsung strategy: keep the parts simple, but make the software look current.
