Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 drives record pre-order demand in Southeast Asia and Oceania

Samsung Electronics reports a near 60% rise in pre-orders for its Galaxy Z Fold8 series in Southeast Asia and Oceania, with the Fold8 surpassing Ultra in popularity amid a global launch boost.

Samsung Electronics says its latest foldables have delivered record pre-order demand in South-east Asia and Oceania, with the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra together rising by almost 60% from the previous Galaxy Z Fold7 launch in the region. The company said the pre-order window runs until August 13, with the Fold8 accounting for almost six in 10 Galaxy Z8 orders and emerging as the most popular model among regional buyers. In the Philippines, Samsung said the Fold8 has become its best-selling foldable during the pre-order period, taking almost 60% of Z8 orders since July 22 and reaching a pace of nearly one unit sold a minute at its peak.

That picture broadly matches reports elsewhere from the launch. Tom’s Guide reported that global pre-orders for Samsung’s Galaxy Z8 line were up 30% year on year in the first week, while T3 said the rise was as high as 70% for the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra combined, with the wider Fold8 taking the largest share of orders. Android Central, citing South Korean data and industry watchers, said the Fold8 had outpaced the Ultra and the Flip8, with some online stock delayed soon after pre-orders opened. The common thread across those reports is that Samsung’s redesigned Fold8, rather than its more premium Ultra variant, appears to be drawing the strongest early consumer response.

Samsung is presenting the Fold8 as the model for people who spend much of their time on video, games, webtoons and e-books, while the Fold8 Ultra is aimed more at productivity users who want a larger canvas for multitasking and photography. The company says the Fold8 is its lightest Galaxy Z Fold at 201g and uses a 4:3 main display for more immersive viewing, while the Ultra offers an 8-inch main display and an upgraded camera system. The Flip8, meanwhile, is being pitched on portability and self-expression, with a redesigned FlexWindow cover screen that brings apps and shortcuts forward without opening the handset.

Samsung is also using the launch to push a wider ecosystem strategy. Alongside the phones, it has introduced the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 and Galaxy Watch9, both of which are tied to its health and wellness software pitch. The company says the new foldables support Smart Switch for wireless data transfer via QR code and Quick Share for easier sharing across iOS and Galaxy devices. Regional buyers are being offered storage upgrades, trade-in bonuses and bundled trials of Google AI Pro, underscoring how Samsung is leaning on promotions as well as hardware to drive adoption in markets where foldables are still gaining ground.
