Sigma introduces a compact, professional-grade 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary lens, challenging the notion of APS-C limitations with high-performance features in a lightweight package, available from October 2026.
Sigma has rounded out its APS-C f/2.8 zoom line-up with the 50-120mm F2.8 DC OS | Contemporary, a telephoto lens that completes a compact three-lens set alongside the 10-18mm and 18-50mm models. On APS-C bodies, the 50-120mm range translates to roughly 75-180mm in full-frame terms, giving users a practical portrait-to-short-telephoto option without the bulk usually associated with professional constant-aperture zooms.
The company is presenting the lens as a direct challenge to the idea that APS-C systems are inherently a compromise. Sigma says the new optic is intended to deliver professional-grade performance in a smaller, lighter package, while remaining easier to carry and less intimidating for photographers moving up from entry-level kit. The lens weighs 390g in Sony E and Fujifilm X mounts, with the Canon RF version slightly heavier at 410g, and Sigma says the three-lens APS-C set weighs under 1kg in total, compared with about 2.9kg for a comparable full-frame trio.
Despite its compact size, the lens includes a number of features expected of higher-end glass. According to Sigma, it offers optical stabilisation, high-response linear actuator autofocus, weather sealing and an 11-blade aperture diaphragm. The optical formula uses 18 elements in 13 groups, including one FLD element, three SLD elements and four aspherical elements, with an aperture range from f/2.8 to f/22. Third-party reports also note up to 6.5 stops of stabilisation and minimal focus breathing, which should make the lens more attractive for video as well as stills.
Sigma has also kept the exterior deliberately simple. In order to preserve the compact design, it has removed physical switches and buttons such as the focus mode switch, AFL button, zoom lock and stabiliser switch. The result is a stripped-back lens that relies more on the camera body for control, while retaining a physical aperture ring. It will be available in October for $799 in Sony E, Fujifilm X and Canon RF mounts, with shipping dates cited by industry reports as October 22, 2026.
