SmartSens targets cleaner 4K mobile video with dual-mode LOFIC sensor

SmartSens says its 50-megapixel SC5D8XS is the first mobile image sensor to support LOFIC operation at both 1x and 2x focal lengths, while reducing motion artefacts and power consumption.

SmartSens has unveiled the SC5D8XS, a 50-megapixel mobile image sensor designed for high-dynamic-range photography and video, and says it is the first in the industry to support LOFIC operation at both 1x and 2x focal lengths. The company said the new sensor is built around its Lofic HDR 4.0 platform and is already in mass production. IT之家 reported that the device reaches a dynamic range of up to 110dB at 1x and 100dB at 2x.

The launch extends SmartSens’s recent push into LOFIC-based mobile imaging. Earlier products from the company, including the SCC90XS and SC5A6XS, showed the same broader strategy: combining high dynamic range with lower power use and support for demanding mobile video workloads. According to separate reports on those sensors, SmartSens has been iterating on its LOFIC architecture with successive generations aimed at improving highlight and shadow retention while keeping energy consumption in check.

A central feature of the SC5D8XS is its approach to motion handling in video. SmartSens says the sensor uses single-exposure, three-frame fusion in LOFIC HDR 4.0 mode to cut motion artefacts and reduce smear around moving subjects. The company also says the sensor can record 4K video at 60fps in that mode, while PixGain HDR mode supports 4K at 120fps for higher-frame-rate capture.

The sensor also pairs imaging performance with autofocus flexibility. In LOFIC mode, SmartSens says the 1x path uses 6% partial-pixel phase-detection autofocus to balance focus speed with power draw, while the 2x path uses 100% full-pixel autofocus for faster and more accurate focusing. In standard mode, the company says its AllPix ADAF and Sparse PDAF systems can switch between full-pixel and partial-pixel autofocus depending on lighting conditions. SmartSens says the SC5D8XS is fabricated on a 22nm stacked process and consumes about 550mW in LOFIC HDR 4.0 video mode, down roughly 18% from the previous generation, or 200mW in normal operation.
