Sony has introduced the FE 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS, its latest addition to the full-frame E-mount lens family, offering photographers a lightweight and affordable alternative to its premium G Master models, expanding options for hobbyists and professionals alike.
Sony’s full-frame E-mount 100-400mm line-up now spans three lenses, giving photographers a choice between outright performance, portability and price. Brian Smith notes that the newest addition, the FE 100-400mm f/5.6-8 OSS, sits alongside the FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS and the FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS, creating a range that covers professional sports work, travel and enthusiast shooting.
The new lens is the clear value play. Digital Camera World says it costs $849, weighs 654g and measures 78.2 x 164.5mm, making it far lighter and smaller than Sony’s G Master alternatives. It uses a 15-element, 10-group optical design, a nine-blade diaphragm and dual linear motors for autofocus, while also offering optical stabilisation, a focus hold button, a zoom lock and teleconverter compatibility that can extend reach to 800mm. Sony says it is aimed at hobbyists and photographers building their skills, with availability expected in September 2026.
By contrast, the FE 100-400mm f/4.5 GM OSS is the premium option for demanding users who want a constant aperture and the strongest autofocus performance. Sony’s earlier G Master lens, announced in 2017, weighs 1,840g, uses 28 elements in 20 groups and includes an internal zoom design, a removable tripod collar and 95mm front filter size. The FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS, meanwhile, is the more compact G Master variant. Camera Labs says it measures 94 x 205mm, weighs 1,395g and includes optical stabilisation, a removable tripod foot and teleconverter support, positioning it as a balanced choice for serious photographers who still value a relatively manageable body.
The wider context is that Sony’s lens ecosystem now gives full-frame users a more segmented set of choices than before.
