Sony has introduced a compact and affordable super-telephoto lens, the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, offering extended reach for outdoor and fast-paced photography, with optional teleconverter support and a September 2026 release in some markets.
Sony has added a new long-reaching zoom to its full-frame E-mount line-up with the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a super-telephoto lens aimed at photographers who want extended reach without the size or cost of premium glass. The lens weighs about 654g, making it notably easier to carry than many professional telephotos, and Sony is positioning it as a more accessible option for wildlife, sport and travel work. Reuters-style reporting from specialist camera outlets says the lens is priced at roughly $849 to $850, underlining that value message.
The optical design combines two ED elements and two aspherical elements to help control colour fringing and other aberrations across the zoom range. It also uses a nine-blade circular aperture, which should produce smoother out-of-focus areas than a simpler diaphragm design. According to the product details carried by camera publications, the lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.86m at 400mm, 1.13m at 100mm, and a maximum magnification of 0.41x, giving it some close-up flexibility as well as reach.
Autofocus is driven by a linear motor system, and Sony says that when the lens is paired with the α9 III it can support continuous shooting with AF and AE tracking at up to around 120 frames per second under the company’s test conditions. The lens also includes a customisable focus hold button, focus mode and range switches, a zoom lock switch and optical stabilisation, plus a dust- and moisture-resistant build for outdoor use. Those features place it firmly in the practical, field-oriented category rather than the more specialised, high-end G Master tier.
Sony has also made the lens teleconverter-compatible. With the optional SEL20TC 2x extender, reach extends to 800mm, or to 1,200mm in APS-C mode, although that comes with the usual trade-off of a slower effective aperture. Reviewers who have tested the lens say image quality and autofocus are solid, but the f/5.6-8 aperture means low-light work will often require higher ISO settings, and teleconverters can further reduce performance. In the Philippines, Sony has listed the lens as “Available soon”, while other reports point to a September 2026 launch window in some markets.
