VAIO brings on-device AI to a cheaper 16-inch laptop with FE16 launch in Brazil

The locally made VAIO FE16 starts at R$4,999 and combines an Intel NPU with upgradeable memory and storage, bringing Copilot-ready features to a broader audience.

VAIO has launched the FE16 in Brazil as a lower-cost entry in its AI PC line-up, with the machine going on sale from R$4,999. According to Canaltech, the 16-inch notebook is made locally by Positivo Tecnologia, which has produced VAIO-branded machines in the country since 2015, and the new model is aimed at bringing on-device artificial intelligence features to a wider range of buyers rather than confining them to premium laptops.

The FE16 is built around Intel Core Series 3 chips based on the Wildcat Lake platform and includes a dedicated neural processing unit rated at up to 17 TOPS. That NPU is intended to handle some AI workloads locally, including camera and audio effects during video calls, which should reduce reliance on cloud processing and help preserve battery life. The notebook is also prepared for Microsoft Copilot and includes a dedicated key for the assistant on the keyboard.

VAIO has pitched the design towards everyday productivity. The display uses a 16:10 aspect ratio with WUXGA resolution and an anti-glare IPS panel, offering more vertical workspace than a standard 16:9 screen. The chassis opens to 180 degrees, measures 19.8 mm thick and weighs 1.8 kg. A 55Wh battery is rated for up to 10 hours of use, while the cooling system uses two heatpipes to improve thermal stability.

One of the more practical selling points is upgradeability. Unlike many ultrabooks with soldered components, the FE16 supports DDR5 memory expansion to 64GB and NVMe M.2 storage up to 4TB. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, Gigabit Ethernet, three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port, HDMI 2.0b, and an SD card reader. The keyboard follows the Brazilian ABNT2 layout, is spill-resistant and is designed to be comfortable for long work sessions, which underlines VAIO’s effort to position the model as a practical business and productivity machine rather than a thin-and-light flagship.
