Xiaomi expands its Redmi 17 lineup to Malaysia, introducing new 5G and 4G models with massive 7,500mAh batteries and high-refresh-rate screens, signalling a focus on battery longevity over premium features.
Xiaomi has extended its Redmi 17 line-up beyond China with the launch of the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G in Malaysia, adding two lower-cost models that emphasise battery life, large displays and basic imaging rather than premium features. According to Business Today and recent leaks picked up by Gadgets 360 and other industry sites, the global rollout follows the Chinese debut of the Redmi Note 17 family, but the Redmi 17 variants sold outside China use different components and a simplified specification set.
Both phones use a 6.9-inch HD+ LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, up to 240Hz touch sampling and a claimed peak brightness of 825 nits. Xiaomi has also fitted Gorilla Glass 7i for display protection and IP64 resistance against dust and splashes. The company says both devices run HyperOS 3 based on Android 16, putting them on its latest software platform at launch.
The main difference between the two models is connectivity and silicon. The Redmi 17 5G uses Qualcomm’s 4nm Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, while the 4G version is powered by MediaTek’s Helio G91-Ultra on a 12nm process. Both variants come with 4GB of RAM, but storage options differ: the 5G model offers up to 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage, while the 4G handset uses eMMC 5.1 storage. That gives the 5G version a clearer performance and responsiveness advantage, even though the rest of the hardware is closely matched.
Camera hardware is modest but consistent across the range, with a 50-megapixel rear sensor and an 8-megapixel front camera on both phones. Xiaomi has instead leaned heavily on battery capacity, fitting a 7,500mAh pack that supports 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse charging. That is a notable jump from the China-market Redmi 17, which reportedly carries a smaller 6,300mAh battery and slower 15W charging.
In Malaysia, the Redmi 17 4G starts at MYR 669 for the 4GB/128GB model, while the Redmi 17 5G begins at MYR 769 for the same memory configuration. A 4GB/256GB Redmi 17 5G variant is priced at MYR 869. Xiaomi is offering the phones in multiple colours, including Black and Deep Blue for both models, with additional finishes such as Lotus Purple and Oak Green for the 4G version and Vivid Orange for the 5G model. Redmi 17 series phones were also recently spotted on BIS, fuelling expectations that an India launch may follow, although Xiaomi has not confirmed a timetable.
