Xiaomi Malaysia launches Redmi 17 series with massive batteries and affordable prices

Xiaomi Malaysia has unveiled the Redmi 17 and Redmi 17 5G, featuring 7,500mAh batteries, large displays, and price points under RM1,000, with the 5G model powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chip.

Xiaomi Malaysia has introduced the Redmi 17 series, positioning both the Redmi 17 and Redmi 17 5G as low-cost phones with unusually large batteries for the class. According to the company’s local launch details, each model carries a 7,500mAh battery, a 6.9-inch 120Hz display and a 50-megapixel main camera, while pricing stays below RM1,000.

The clearer split between the two phones is in performance and connectivity. Xiaomi says the Redmi 17 5G uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5, a 4nm chip with 5G support, while the standard Redmi 17 relies on MediaTek’s Helio G91-Ultra and remains a 4G-only model. Malaysian specifications show both phones arriving with 4GB of LPDDR4X memory, but the 5G version offers either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 storage, while the 4G handset uses slower eMMC 5.1 storage.

The display on both devices is a 6.9-inch panel with 1,600×720 resolution, up to 120Hz refresh rate and 825 nits of peak brightness in high-brightness mode. Xiaomi also includes an 8-megapixel selfie camera, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, AI face unlock and HyperOS 3. For durability, the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 both carry Corning Gorilla Glass 7i and an IP64 rating for dust and splash resistance.

Pricing in Malaysia starts at RM799 for the Redmi 17 5G with 128GB of storage and RM899 for the 256GB version, although launch promotions cut those figures to RM769 and RM869. The Redmi 17 4G is listed at RM699, with a promotional price of RM669. Xiaomi is also offering an after-sales package from August 8 to August 31 that includes 24-month assurance, one free screen replacement within 24 months, one free battery replacement within 36 months and one free cover or lens replacement within 24 months. The phones are available in different finishes, with the 5G model sold in Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange, and the 4G version in Oak Green, Deep Blue, Black and Lotus Purple.
