Xiaomi expands its Redmi lineup with the launch of the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G, featuring large displays and ultra-capacious batteries aimed at customers prioritising endurance over premium hardware.
Xiaomi has expanded its budget Redmi line with two new models, the Redmi 17 5G and Redmi 17 4G, both built around large screens, unusually large batteries and a small RGB light on the rear camera housing that doubles as a charging and notification indicator. According to TechnoBaboy, the phones are aimed at buyers who want endurance and practical extras rather than premium materials or advanced camera hardware.
Both handsets use a 6.9-inch LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, while the display is tuned for HD+ resolution and peak brightness of 825 nits, according to the specifications shared by TechnoBaboy and earlier leaks reported by Gizmochina. That combination puts the Redmi 17 family squarely in the entry-level segment, but the high refresh rate should still make scrolling and basic gaming feel smoother than on standard 60Hz budget phones.
Battery capacity is the main attraction. Xiaomi has fitted both versions with a 7,500mAh cell, supported by 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse charging, meaning the phone can also top up accessories or another device. The 4G model is said to use MediaTek’s Helio G91-Ultra, while the 5G version runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5. As Gizmochina noted in July, the 4G variant is expected to ship with up to 6GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, alongside HyperOS 3 and IP64 dust and water resistance.
Camera hardware is modest but functional, with a 50MP rear sensor and an 8MP front camera on both models. Other common features include a side-mounted fingerprint reader, NFC, face unlock, Bluetooth 5.1 and a 3.5mm headphone jack. TechnoBaboy reported colour options of Black, Deep Blue and Vivid Orange for the 5G model, while the 4G version adds Lotus Purple and Oak Green. Pricing starts at MYR 669 for the 4G handset and MYR 769 for the 5G model, keeping the range firmly in the value category. Earlier reports from Gizmochina, GSMChoice and The Tech Outlook had already pointed to a large-battery Redmi 17 family and suggested that Xiaomi was preparing multiple regional variants, which now appears to be reflected in the two-model launch.
