The Xiaomi Watch S5 signals a shift in Chinese smartwatch design, offering a stainless-steel build, bright AMOLED display, and impressive battery endurance, challenging premium rivals at a lower price point.
For years, Chinese smartwatches were dismissed as cheap Apple Watch lookalikes, usually built from plastic and let down by clumsy software. The Xiaomi Watch S5 suggests that view is now outdated. According to the French report that prompted this article, Xiaomi has pushed the watch into more ambitious territory with a stainless-steel case, a bright AMOLED screen and finishes intended to make it feel closer to a proper timepiece than a budget gadget.
The design is central to that argument. Xiaomi uses a 46mm 316L stainless-steel body that is 10.99mm thick and weighs about 46g without the strap, while the rotating crown adds a more traditional feel. Gadgets360 and MobiGyaan both note the 1.48-inch AMOLED display, which reaches a peak brightness of 2,500 nits, making it easier to read outdoors. Xiaomi also offers variants such as Jungle Green and Ceramic Blue, underlining that this is meant to sell on appearance as much as on specifications.
The Watch S5 is not just about looks. Beebom, T3 and other reviews say it supports more than 150 sports modes, dual-band GNSS and 5 ATM water resistance, while Xiaomi’s health suite covers heart rate, blood oxygen, stress and women’s health tracking. The company also links the sleep analysis to work developed with the World Sleep Society, and the Mi Fitness app integrates with Health Connect. But the software remains limited compared with Wear OS or watchOS: there is no third-party app store, reply options for notifications are restricted, and NFC payment support is still patchy in some markets.
Battery life is one of the clearest reasons this model stands out. Xiaomi says the 815mAh battery can last up to 21 days in light use. Independent testing quoted by the French article puts real-world endurance lower, but still strong, at around 14.5 days with heavy tracking or more than eight days with the always-on display enabled. In France, the Watch S5 is typically priced between €179.99 and €199.99, often discounted to around €170, which places it well below premium rivals from Apple and Samsung. Its target audience is therefore clear: buyers who want a polished smartwatch with strong endurance, not a miniature phone on the wrist.
