Xiaomi unveils the Redmi 17 4G and 5G with massive 7,500mAh batteries, 120Hz displays, and unique rear RGB lighting, offering a fresh take on affordable smartphones stacked with endurance features.
Xiaomi has unveiled two new entry-level phones, the Redmi 17 4G and Redmi 17 5G, expanding its budget line with large batteries, 120Hz displays and an unusual rear RGB light intended for alerts and charging status. The 4G model starts at MYR 669, while the 5G version begins at MYR 769, according to the announcement carried by JAm Online.
The pair share a 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 1600 x 720 resolution. Their headline specification is a 7,500mAh battery, paired with 45W wired charging and 22.5W reverse wired charging, which lets the phone act as a power bank for other devices. The programmable RGB light on the back can be set to signal calls, system notifications and charging activity, giving the handset a more distinctive design than most phones in this price band.
Under the hood, the Redmi 17 5G uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chip, while the 4G version is fitted with MediaTek’s Helio G91-Ultra. Both models come with 4GB or 6GB of LPDDR4X memory and 128GB or 256GB of storage, though the 5G variant uses faster UFS 2.2 storage and the 4G model relies on eMMC 5.1, a slower and older standard. Each phone also includes a 50-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front camera, IP64 dust and water resistance, a side fingerprint sensor, NFC and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The launch aligns with earlier reporting on the Redmi 17 family, which described the 4G model as a successor to the Redmi 15 and pointed to the same large battery, flat 6.9-inch screen and RGB lighting concept. Leaks had also suggested a wider camera island and multiple colour options, including Oak Green and Lotus Purple, which are now part of the official specification sheet. For buyers focused on battery life and basic connectivity rather than premium display quality, Xiaomi’s new pair looks designed to maximise endurance at a low cost.
