ZWO Astro unveils the Seestar S50 Pro, featuring dual 4K cameras, advanced optics, and automation tools designed to simplify astrophotography for amateurs while enhancing image quality and stability.
ZWO Astro has launched the Seestar S50 Pro, a smart telescope aimed at making astrophotography far less technical for beginners and more convenient for experienced users. The company has kept the compact 50mm f/5.2 optical design of the original model, but has added a four-element ED glass lens and a stronger imaging package intended to improve edge-to-edge sharpness and reduce colour fringing. According to Digital Camera World, the new model also brings an equatorial mode for longer, steadier exposures and additional image-processing tools in the app.
The headline change is the dual-camera system. ZWO says the telephoto unit uses a 1/1.2-inch 8.3MP sensor with a 260mm focal length equivalent, while the wide-angle camera uses a 1/2-inch 8.3MP sensor with a 35mm full-frame equivalent view for nightscapes, star trails and Milky Way shots. Both cameras record at 4K resolution in vertical format, and the telescope handles object selection, tracking, focus and image stacking automatically through a smartphone app. That automation is central to the product’s pitch: users choose a target from a list, point the telescope and let the system do the rest.
ZWO has also expanded the hardware around the optics. The Seestar S50 Pro includes 128GB of internal eMMC storage, with about 100GB available for user files, and a 10,000mAh battery rated for up to nine hours of use under the company’s stated conditions. The telescope supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C, and can also be powered from an external source for longer sessions. Built-in filters include UV/IR cut and dual-band light-pollution filtering, which should help when imaging emission nebulae from less-than-ideal skies.
The model is being sold as a more capable all-in-one system rather than a specialist instrument, with the emphasis firmly on simplicity and portability. ZWO’s own announcement says the Seestar S50 Pro went on sale on 25 August 2026 through its website and selected retailers, while Digital Camera World reported pre-orders at $999, or £899. In a crowded smart-telescope market, that places the device squarely against rivals that are also trying to combine automation, image quality and low-barrier operation for amateur astronomers.
