Apple’s upcoming foldable iPhone Duo introduces a daring design shift and software enhancements, sparking debate over its value compared to the traditional iPhone 18 Pro Max amidst a premium price gap.
Apple’s latest premium iPhone choice is shaping up as a contest between novelty and restraint. Tom’s Guide says the first foldable iPhone, the iPhone Duo, is Apple’s boldest redesign yet, but it arrives at a steep premium above the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which itself now starts at $1,299 after a price rise. That leaves buyers weighing a familiar flagship against a device that promises tablet-like flexibility in a pocketable form. According to MacRumors, Apple’s 2026 Pro pricing reinforces how far the Duo sits above the rest of the range.
On design, the contrast is stark. The iPhone 18 Pro Max keeps to Apple’s established large-screen slab format, while the Duo folds into a narrower handset for easier one-handed use and opens to a 7.6-inch inner display suited to split-screen work and media. Tom’s Guide says Apple has also worked to reduce the crease that usually betrays foldable panels, while Android Central notes that the Duo adds several features long associated with Android phones, underlining how much Apple is borrowing from a category it once avoided.
Camera buyers are likely to split along different priorities. The iPhone 18 Pro Max offers the more complete pro-style system, with three 48MP cameras, a variable aperture on the main sensor, and support for ProRAW, Apple Log and spatial capture. The Duo, by contrast, uses two 48MP rear cameras and leans into content creation by letting users prop the phone upright and use the cover display as a live preview for selfies and vlogging. That makes it practical for solo creators, but the omission of a dedicated telephoto lens leaves it at a disadvantage for long-range shooting.
Both models run on Apple’s A20 Pro chip, which Tom’s Hardware describes as Apple’s first 2-nanometre smartphone processor. Early hands-on impressions suggest strong performance in both phones, although the iPhone 18 Pro Max may have a thermal edge thanks to a larger vapour chamber. Battery life is close as well, with Apple rating the Duo for up to 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and the Pro Max for up to 45 hours. Charging support is broadly matched, with both phones rated to reach 50 per cent in about 30 minutes using a 35W adapter.
Software may be the Duo’s clearest advantage. Tom’s Guide says both phones launch with iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence features, but the foldable model gains genuine split-screen multitasking and smoother app hand-offs between its two displays. That gives it a more ambitious software story than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which remains the safer all-round choice for people who mainly want a conventional flagship. The verdict, for now, is that Apple’s foldable is the more intriguing device, but the Pro Max still looks like the better value for most buyers.
