Battery race heats up with Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 17 Pro Max leading the charge

The latest flagship models from Xiaomi, Realme, and Vivo push the boundaries of battery capacity, yet superb endurance depends on more than just size, highlighting a nuanced shift in smartphone priorities.

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 17 Pro Max, Realme’s P4s and Vivo’s V70 Lite 4G show how far the battery race has moved beyond ordinary phone marketing. The headline figure is Xiaomi’s 10,000mAh cell, which makes the Redmi the most obviously endurance-led of the three. Realme counters with an 8,000mAh battery in a device built around gaming, while Vivo has opted for 8,100mAh in a 4G handset aimed at buyers who value long run-time over cutting-edge connectivity.

Of the three, the Redmi looks like the safest recommendation for most people. Digital Camera World said the phone combines a 10,000mAh battery, or 9,210mAh in Europe, with 100W charging, and described its battery life as exceptional, exceeding two days of heavy use. The same review said the device is sensibly built, with a 6.83-inch AMOLED screen, Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chip, up to 12GB of RAM, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection and IP69K resistance. Its weakness is the camera system, which pairs a 50MP main sensor with an 8MP ultrawide and omits a telephoto lens.

Realme’s P4s is the more specialised phone. Gizmochina reported that Realme positioned the device around gaming, with a Dimensity 7400 Ultra processor, a dedicated HyperVision+ chip, a 7,000mm² vapour chamber and a 144Hz AMOLED display. The company also said the handset supports up to 144fps in compatible games and carries an 8,000mAh battery with 80W charging. Realme later launched the phone in India, adding IP66, IP68 and IP69 resistance, 80W wired charging, reverse wired charging and bypass charging to reduce heat during gameplay.

The more useful question, however, is whether a bigger battery always means a better phone. Review coverage suggests not. Some early testing of the P4s found endurance to be good but not universally outstanding for such a large cell, which reinforces a basic point about modern smartphones: capacity is only one part of battery life. Display efficiency, chipset behaviour, thermal management and software tuning all affect how long a phone lasts in practice. A large battery can still feel merely average if the rest of the hardware is less disciplined.

Vivo’s V70 Lite 4G fills a different niche. It makes sense in markets where buyers prioritise endurance, durability and price over 5G support, but it is a harder sell in countries where 5G has become standard. That leaves Xiaomi with the clearest all-round battery story, Realme with the most purposeful gaming device, and Vivo with the most selective appeal. The broader pattern is clear: battery size has become a central selling point again, but the smarter purchase still depends on what sits around the cell, not just the number printed beside it.
