Garmin Enduro 4 versus Fenix 9 Pro Solar: a focus on endurance and connectivity features

Garmin’s latest outdoor watches, the Enduro 4 and Fenix 9 Pro Solar, feature similar core technology but cater to different user needs, with the former excelling in battery life and endurance, and the latter offering enhanced connectivity and luxury features.

Garmin’s Enduro 4 and Fenix 9 Pro Solar sit close together in the company’s outdoor range, but they are aimed at different buyers. According to Garmin’s specifications and recent reviews, both watches share the same core platform for training, route-finding and health tracking, including grade-adjusted pace workouts, ClimbPro, TopoActive mapping, training readiness, the ECG app and the built-in flashlight. Garmin has also said that much of the Fenix 9 generation software will reach older models, underlining that the two watches are as much about hardware priorities as software capability.

The main distinction is that the Fenix 9 Pro Solar adds features the Enduro 4 does not have on its launch sheet. Garmin lists wrist-based phone calls via a speaker and microphone, voice command access, a dive computer for scuba and apnea to 40m, and an inReach variant with LTE and satellite messaging, weather and SOS functions. By contrast, the Enduro 4 stays focused on endurance use and leaves those communication and diving tools out. Garmin’s Enduro 4 announcement instead highlights its ultra-endurance positioning, with Garmin Epic for multi-day activity logging and a 1.4-inch MIP solar display designed to stretch battery life rather than prioritise premium extras.

Battery life is where the Enduro 4 clearly separates itself. Garmin rates it for up to 90 days in smartwatch mode with solar assistance, or 320 hours in GPS activity mode with solar, versus 57 days and 211 hours respectively for the 51mm Fenix 9 Pro Solar. Even without solar input, the Enduro 4 leads the larger Fenix by a smaller but still meaningful margin, at 36 days to 30 days in smartwatch mode and 80 hours to 75 hours in normal GPS use. Garmin’s own solar assumptions are generous, however, so the practical advantage will depend heavily on how often the watch is worn outdoors in strong light.

Weight and size also point to different use cases. Garmin says the Enduro 4 weighs 66g with its strap, which is 36g lighter than the 102g 51mm Fenix 9 Pro Solar. That difference matters on long runs, stage races and multi-day hikes. The trade-off is that the Enduro 4 is sold only in a 51mm case, while the Fenix 9 Pro Solar also comes in a 47mm version for smaller wrists. Review coverage of the Fenix 9 Pro has consistently described it as a more luxurious, all-titanium watch with a brighter AMOLED display on some variants, whereas the Enduro 4 uses a fibre-reinforced polymer case with a titanium bezel to keep weight down.

Price reflects that split. Garmin launched the Enduro 4 at £799.99, or $899.99, while the 51mm Fenix 9 Pro Solar started at £1,029.99, or $1,199.99, with the 47mm model priced lower. That makes the Enduro 4 the better-value option for athletes who mainly want the longest runtime and the lightest large Garmin with full mapping and training tools. The Fenix 9 Pro Solar, meanwhile, is the more versatile watch for users who want satellite safety, diving support or wrist-based calling, and the inReach version raises the cost further by adding off-grid messaging and SOS.

For endurance athletes, the choice is therefore straightforward: the Enduro 4 is the specialist tool, built for the longest possible time between charges. The Fenix 9 Pro Solar is the broader premium package, with more communication features, more size options and a more luxurious build. Garmin’s own positioning suggests that the two watches overlap heavily in sport and navigation, but diverge where battery economy and added connectivity begin to matter most.
