Google Pixel 10a trades premium materials and performance for a $300 saving over Pixel 10

Despite sharing key features like the display and camera, the Pixel 10a’s lower price is driven by cheaper materials and older hardware, raising questions about value for money.

Google’s Pixel 10a sits awkwardly close to the Pixel 10 on the spec sheet, yet Google is asking $300 less for it. The cheaper model starts at $499, while the Pixel 10 begins at $799, despite both phones using a 6.3-inch display and sharing the same 48MP main rear camera sensor. The gap is less about the headline features and more about the parts underneath them.

According to the comparisons from PhoneArena and TechRadar, the 10a makes its savings visible in the materials. It uses a plastic rear panel rather than the Pixel 10’s glass back with Gorilla Glass Victus 2, and it also drops support for Pixelsnap magnetic accessories. The front glass is cheaper too, with Gorilla Glass 7i on the 10a. Wider display bezels further signal the cut-price position, even though the handset still keeps an aluminium frame.

Performance is another clear dividing line. Google has fitted the Pixel 10a with the Tensor G4, the same chip used in the Pixel 9 family, alongside 8GB of RAM. The Pixel 10 gets the newer Tensor G5 made on a 3nm process by TSMC, plus 12GB of RAM. Google says the newer processor delivers a 34% average CPU improvement over the G4, which helps explain why the mainstream Pixel holds the stronger premium position.

Camera hardware also separates the two phones. Both keep the same main and ultra-wide cameras, but the Pixel 10 adds a 10.8MP telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom, which the 10a lacks. Battery figures are closer, with the 10a carrying a 5,100mAh cell against 4,970mAh in the Pixel 10, and both supporting 30W wired charging. TechRadar noted that the 10a can look like the better bargain on endurance, but the Pixel 10 still offers the broader feature set, especially for users who value zoom and wireless charging support.
