The latest comparison between Google’s Pixel Watch 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9 highlights a shift in priorities, with Google emphasising advanced health monitoring and Samsung focusing on affordability and durability.
Google’s Pixel Watch 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9 arrive as closely matched Android smartwatches, but their differences are becoming clearer. Tom’s Guide says the two models sit in the same class on paper, yet the latest round of testing points to a split between Samsung’s lower starting price and Google’s stronger emphasis on health and safety software.
Price is the first divider. According to Tom’s Guide, Samsung has raised the entry cost of the Galaxy Watch 9 to $379, while Google has set the Pixel Watch 5 at $399. Android Central reports that Google’s base 41mm model starts at $399, with LTE versions priced higher, while Samsung’s 40mm and 44mm variants span a wider range depending on connectivity. In simple terms, the Galaxy Watch 9 remains the cheaper starting point, but both brands have moved the segment up a notch.
The design language is also very different. Tom’s Guide describes the Pixel Watch 5 as a true circle with a domed display and a much slimmer bezel, available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. Samsung’s watch keeps the company’s cushion-shaped case, with a flatter screen and a thicker surrounding border. Android Central says both watches use bright AMOLED panels rated up to 3,000 nits, but Samsung adds MIL-STD-810H ruggedness, alongside IP68 and 5ATM protection.
Health and safety tools may matter more than styling for many buyers. Tom’s Guide says both watches support fall detection and emergency SOS, but Samsung adds FDA-cleared sleep apnoea detection, while Google offers Loss of Pulse Detection and Breathing Emergency Detection. Tom’s Guide also notes that Google’s newer health tools sit behind the company’s Health Premium subscription, whereas Samsung’s fitness coaching features are free, though they are tied to a Samsung phone. Android Central adds that Google is pushing deeper health monitoring, including trend-based tracking and AI-led guidance.
The result is a fairly clear trade-off. Samsung appears to be the better value for buyers who want a lower entry price, stronger durability claims and free software features inside its own ecosystem. Google looks more ambitious on health monitoring, AI features and storage, and its Pixel Watch 5 is also said to offer a larger software upgrade story. For Android users choosing between them, the decision now seems less about raw specifications than which ecosystem, design and health approach matters most.
