Google retains fast charging for Pixel Watch 5, maintaining competitive edge

Google has kept the Pixel Watch 5’s quick charge feature intact, enabling it to reach 50% in 15 minutes. This move underscores the importance of fast charging as a key factor in user convenience amid market competition and evolving wearable tech strategies.

Google has left one of the Pixel Watch’s best features untouched in the Pixel Watch 5: its charging speed. According to Android Police, the watch still uses the Quick Charge Dock and is expected to reach about 50% in 15 minutes, with a full charge in roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on conditions. That matters more than a modest battery increase, because faster top-ups can make smartwatch ownership far easier to manage day to day.

The basic pitch is familiar from the Pixel Watch 4, which Android Police said could recover enough power for a full day in a short morning charge. Google’s support pages continue to stress correct placement on the magnetic charger and note that reverse wireless charging from Pixel phones is not supported, which underlines how dependent the watch remains on its own dock. In other words, convenience still comes from speed rather than universal compatibility.

That speed also helps Google keep pace with the wider market, where charging times remain uneven. Android Central reported that Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro support 10W fast wireless charging, but still take about 75 minutes and 90 minutes respectively to fill up. Apple’s latest Watch is closer, reaching full charge in about 70 minutes in testing, though Android Police noted it can still hit 80% in around 30 minutes.

The broader point is that battery life is only part of the smartwatch equation. Screen-less fitness bands and smart rings such as the Oura Ring 5 are putting pressure on full-featured watches, and charging time is now a major factor in whether users keep wearing them every day. On that measure, Google appears to believe the Pixel Watch already has an advantage strong enough to preserve.
