Google’s Pixel Watch 5 disrupts market with repairability and health innovations

Google’s Pixel Watch 5 emerges as a significant contender to Apple and Samsung with enhanced repairability, longer battery life, advanced safety features, and new health tracking capabilities, signalling a shift towards more durable and medically aware wearables.

Google’s latest Pixel Watch has emerged as a sharper rival to Apple’s Watch Series 11 and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9, chiefly because it addresses several practical weaknesses that still define much of the smartwatch market. In a comparison for TechRadar, Matt Evans said the Pixel Watch 5 stands out most clearly in repairability, endurance, satellite safety functions and health tracking, even though it is still a relatively modest update in hardware terms.

The biggest difference is that the watch can be taken apart and repaired with standard Torx T2 tools, allowing the battery and display to be replaced. That is unusual for a compact, sealed wearable and, if widely adopted, would extend product life and reduce electronic waste. The move also contrasts with Google’s earlier approach to Pixel Watches, which MacRumors reported had no official repair route and were effectively treated as replacement-only devices.

Battery life also gives Google an edge. TechRadar said the larger Pixel Watch 5 can last up to 40 hours, matching Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 9, while Apple’s latest model is rated for 24 hours. Google and Apple both support fast charging, but the Pixel Watch’s small charging puck makes the process less cumbersome in daily use. Android Central reported that Google has kept the same 41mm and 45mm sizes, with the same domed AMOLED display, but has improved internal performance with a faster Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated chip and doubled storage to 64GB.

Google’s new watch also narrows the gap on premium navigation and safety features. According to TechRadar, it uses dual-band L1+L5 GPS and connects to more satellite networks than competing watches, a claim that puts it in the same conversation as high-end outdoor devices. It also offers emergency satellite SOS messaging through Skylo, which Android Central said is available on selected versions and can send location data and messages without a phone connection. That kind of feature has typically been reserved for ultra-premium devices.

Health tracking is where Google appears to be making its boldest push. Android Central said the Pixel Watch 5 adds Blood Pressure Trends, Sleep Breathing Quality and Insulin Resistance Trends, while Tom’s Guide said Google is using predictive health signals rather than live medical readings. The latter feature is not yet active, but Google says it is due in September 2026. Taken together, the upgrades suggest a strategy focused less on a dramatic redesign and more on turning the Pixel Watch into a more durable, safety-focused and medically aware wearable.
