Google’s Tensor G6 chip prioritises AI and efficiency over benchmark speed

Leaks suggest Google’s upcoming Pixel Tensor G6 chip adopts a 3nm process with a focus on responsiveness and AI, but benchmarks reveal it may lag behind rivals in raw performance.

Google’s next Pixel chip is shaping up as a deliberate shift rather than a raw performance play. Leaks and early benchmark reports suggest the Tensor G6, expected for the Pixel 11 line, will move to TSMC’s 3nm manufacturing process and add targeted gains in browsing, app launch speed and TPU performance, the unit Google uses for AI tasks. That points to a design focused on responsiveness and on-device intelligence rather than chasing the fastest benchmark figures.

Several reports now agree that the chip will not be built on the much-discussed 2nm node. Tom’s Guide said the Tensor G6 is instead expected to use TSMC’s 3nm process, while a separate Japanese report from Gihyo described Google’s approach as one that prioritises user experience over peak performance. In practical terms, that means the company appears to be aiming for better efficiency, stronger AI features and steadier everyday use, rather than a dramatic leap in CPU speed.

The benchmark picture, however, is less flattering. Tom’s Guide reported leaked Geekbench results for a Pixel 11 Pro XL showing 2,112 in single-core testing and 5,196 in multi-core, far below the numbers attributed to Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra. Another leak cited by Techolam suggested even weaker scores, with the Tensor G6 landing well behind current rivals. If accurate, those results would leave Google still trailing the top chips from Apple and Samsung in conventional processing power.

Other leaks describe a more unusual internal layout. Gizmochina reported that a device thought to be a Pixel 11 appeared on Geekbench with a 7-core Tensor processor, including one high-performance Arm C1-Ultra core, several C1-Pro cores and lower-clocked efficiency cores. TechGenyz said the chip may also use a PowerVR graphics unit based on an older design, alongside updated TPU components. Taken together, those details suggest Google is building around mixed priorities: faster AI, improved efficiency and acceptable general performance, but not a direct race for headline benchmark supremacy.

That strategy may still suit Pixel buyers if the gains show up where Google wants them most. According to the reports, the Tensor G6 is being tuned for quicker web browsing, faster app opening and stronger on-device AI processing, areas that matter more to many users than synthetic benchmark scores. The risk is that, in a market where Samsung and Apple continue to raise the bar on CPU performance, Google could find its flagship phones judged by numbers that do not flatter its chosen design.
