Indian electric scooter market shifts as delivery timelines and features redefine mainstream competition

A new wave of family-oriented electric scooters from Simple Energy, Ola, Ather, and incumbents like TVS and Bajaj are reshaping India’s mass-market EV segment, with strategic focus on delivery timelines, ecosystem support, and affordability amid intense competition.

India’s new family electric-scooter fight is not being decided by range claims alone; it is also being decided by who can actually deliver, and when. Simple Energy says deliveries of the Wave will begin on 25 September 2026, while Ola Electric’s S1 Z is split between a December 2026 start for the 3.1kWh model and March 2027 for the 5.1kWh version. Ather’s Konarc timetable is more fluid still: Autocar India reported a 21 September 2026 rollout for the S 125 and S 161, but Ather’s current FAQ now says only those two Konarc S variants are on sale in select cities and places the 100km, Z-line and 200km versions later on the calendar. That matters because all three new arrivals are trying to break out of narrower identities and into the mass family market. Autocar India says Ather is using the Konarc to move beyond its premium, technology-led niche, while Simple Energy has shifted from performance-first scooters into what it calls a family-oriented product with broad storage and comfort appeal. Ather’s case is built as much around ownership engineering as around specification. The Konarc is the first scooter on its new EL platform, which the company says was designed for safety, serviceability and scale. Autocar India reported a launch demonstration in which the motor and transmission assembly was removed in 38 seconds and refitted in 1 minute 33 seconds, alongside a doubled 10,000km service interval versus the 5,000km norm it cited for most scooters. Ather also says the Konarc has 14-inch wheels, long-travel suspension and 31 litres of boot space, while its current pricing and warranty structure starts at ₹99,999 effective ex-showroom and rises if buyers add AtherStack Pro and extended battery cover, which can stretch to 10 years or 1,00,000km. Simple’s Wave is the most overt attempt to merge family packaging with brisk performance. Launched in Bengaluru on 2 September 2026, it spans three trims and six configurations, with battery packs from 2.2kWh to 5kWh. The Wave+ carries the headline numbers: up to 243km IDC range, 90km/h, and 70 litres of storage, while the higher Wave variants also claim 0-40km/h in 3.3 seconds. Hindustan Times reported that the scooter’s softer, friendlier look was inspired by a dolphin and that the Wave and Wave+ can reach 90km/h, while the official product page shows the entry Wave S topping out at 75km/h. Ola’s S1 Z takes a different route, aiming to overwhelm rivals on the price-to-range chart. Business Standard reported that the range, launched on 28 August 2026, is Ola’s first to use its made-in-India Bharat Cell LFP chemistry, engineered at its Battery Innovation Centre and manufactured at its Gigafactory. Ola’s own product page lists 179km for ₹79,999 and 301km for ₹99,999, both with a 70km/h top speed, 4kW peak motor output, MoveOS 5 and a 3-year/40,000km scooter warranty. The trade-off is timing and performance positioning: the long-range 5.1kWh version is not due until March 2027, and the 70km/h ceiling clearly suggests a commuter brief rather than an enthusiast one. The incumbents remain formidable precisely because they are no longer standing still. TVS’s current iQube range runs from 2.3kWh to 5.3kWh, with 114km to 212km of IDC range, effective ex-showroom pricing from ₹95,124 with PM E-Drive, more than 118 connected features, 2,000-plus charging locations and 32 litres of under-seat storage. Bajaj, meanwhile, formally renamed and upgraded its electric line-up as the C series in April 2026. VIDA’s VX2 shows how quickly this market has moved. When Hero MotoCorp launched it in July 2025, the emphasis was affordability: ₹59,490 for the VX2 Go and ₹64,990 for the VX2 Plus under Battery-as-a-Service, or ₹99,490 and ₹109,990 without subscription, plus a pay-per-kilometre battery plan from ₹0.96 that included fast-charging access and battery replacement if health fell below 70 per cent. Since then, Hero’s current VIDA pages show a broader VX2 ladder, including 3.1kWh, 3.4kWh and 4.4kWh versions, with the top VX2 Plus 4.4 claiming 187km IDC range and 90km/h while keeping removable batteries. The practical lesson is that headline numbers often belong to the least representative versions. Ather’s own FAQ says the only Konarc S variants currently available are the 125km and 161km models, with TrueRange figures of 100km and 130km. Simple’s 243km claim belongs to the Wave+ 5kWh. Ola’s 301km number belongs to the 5.1kWh S1 Z that is scheduled for March 2027, not the ₹79,999 scooter that arrives first. TVS and Bajaj look less sensational on paper, but both already offer mature variant structures with known charging and equipment trade-offs, and VIDA still has a unique advantage for riders who cannot plug in at their parking space. TVS iQube and Bajaj Chetak are the conservative choices; VIDA VX2 is the easiest to recommend for apartment charging and flexible ownership; Ather Konarc looks the most thoroughly thought through on serviceability and ecosystem design, but its full line-up is not yet fully in buyers’ hands; Simple Wave offers the strongest blend of storage and performance if the company can deliver at scale; and Ola S1 Z is the purest range-per-rupee play, provided buyers are willing to wait and judge support quality locally.
