Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon chips reveal limits of branding in foldable smartphones

Recent testing shows that newer chip branding does not always translate to superior real-world performance in foldable devices, highlighting the importance of thermal management and device design.

Motorola’s latest foldables show that chip branding is a poor shorthand for real-world speed. In a side-by-side test of the Razr Ultra 2026 and the Razr Fold, Android Central found that the older Snapdragon 8 Elite in the Ultra did not deliver a simple across-the-board win over the newer Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 in the Fold. The result was mixed: each processor led in some tasks, while thermal limits had a bigger effect than the label on the silicon.

That matters because Qualcomm has recently pushed its Oryon-based designs across more of its premium mobile range. According to Android Central’s reporting on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, both chips use the company’s custom CPU architecture and are built on TSMC’s 3nm process, but they are tuned differently. The Elite model reaches higher clock speeds, while the non-Elite chip is positioned as a slightly lower-clocked flagship platform for premium devices. Qualcomm has said the Elite variant brings roughly 20% better CPU performance and 35% better efficiency than its predecessor, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is meant to deliver much of that platform’s capability at a lower tier.

In testing, the Razr Ultra 2026 posted stronger single-core scores in Geekbench 6, which is the kind of performance that affects app launch speed and everyday responsiveness. The Razr Fold, however, edged ahead in multi-core results in that same benchmark, suggesting better throughput for heavily threaded tasks. Geekbench 7 told a different story: the Ultra’s Snapdragon 8 Elite came out ahead in multi-core work there, while single-core performance remained broadly similar between the two phones. For on-device AI, the Razr Fold was clearly ahead, with higher Geekbench AI scores than the Ultra.

Graphics performance tilted back towards the Razr Ultra 2026. In 3DMark Wild Life Extreme, the Elite chip delivered better average frame rates and higher scores, indicating stronger gaming and GPU performance. But the most important finding came in the stress test. The Razr Ultra 2026 overheated after only a few minutes and could not complete the 20-minute run, while the Razr Fold finished with 56.5% stability. That suggests the Ultra’s chip may be too aggressive for the thermal envelope of a clamshell foldable, even if its peak numbers look better on paper.

The broader lesson is that buyers should look beyond the “Elite” badge. Qualcomm’s newer chips are powerful, but sustained performance still depends on cooling, power management and the device design around the processor. In this case, Android Central’s testing suggests the newer base Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 may be the more balanced option in a foldable, while the older Snapdragon 8 Elite can still win select benchmarks but struggles when workload and heat build up.
