RGB branding race masks the persistent importance of TV brightness and zone count

Amid a flurry of rebranded mini-LED and RGB backlight TVs, experts emphasise that actual performance depends more on brightness, zone count, and viewing conditions than on technology labels, signalling a shift towards practical specs over marketing hype.

This year’s TV showroom promises a fresh round of alphabet soup, but the labels are doing more to confuse than to clarify. LG has Micro RGB evo, Samsung is pushing Micro RGB, Hisense calls its version RGB Mini-LED, TCL offers RGB Mini-LED and SQD Mini-LED and Sony has trademarked True RGB for a future launch. Despite the branding arms race, the underlying idea is much the same: these are all variations on LCD backlighting, not entirely new display classes. According to reporting from Business Standard and specialist TV coverage, the big selling point is tighter colour control and brighter highlights, but the name on the badge tells you far less than the conditions in your room.

The real divide is still between self-emissive screens such as OLED and LCD sets that rely on a backlight. OLED remains the standard for deep blacks and contrast in dark rooms, while bright-room performance still favours LCD-based designs, including mini-LED and these newer RGB backlight systems. Industry explainers this year continue to place mini-LED as the better-value option for well-lit living spaces, with QD-OLED sitting in a separate category that combines an OLED panel with quantum dots for improved colour performance. The practical point, repeated across 2026 buying guides, is that no amount of rebranding changes the fact that room lighting and viewing habits matter more than the acronym.

That is why the numbers behind the marketing matter more than the name of the technology. TCL’s X11L, for example, is promoted at 10,000 nits, but that figure applies to brief peaks on a small test window rather than to a full screen of bright content. Full-field brightness is what determines how a television holds up with sports, daytime news or a snowy landscape, and that is a far more useful figure for ordinary buyers than a headline peak number. TCL’s own premium model is said to land somewhere between 400 and 900 nits in full-screen use depending on picture mode and testing method, which is a long way from the marketing slogan.

Another specification worth watching is dimming-zone count, because that directly affects blooming, the halo effect around bright objects on dark backgrounds. Here, the difference between similar-sounding products can be stark. LG’s Micro RGB evo is reported to have just over 1,000 dimming zones, while TCL’s X11L is said to have 20,736. That gap helps explain why two televisions can share the same broad backlight idea yet behave very differently in practice. Samsung’s latest QD-OLED models also remain relevant in this conversation, with the S95H and the cheaper S90H now sitting below the flagship RGB sets on price, according to the product information cited in recent coverage.

Pricing is beginning to bring these technologies into a more realistic range, though the premium end remains expensive. LG’s MRGB95 starts at $4,999.99 in 75-inch, 86-inch and 100-inch sizes, while Hisense’s UR9 matches that price at 75 inches and undercuts it at 65 inches, where Best Buy lists it at $1,999.99. Samsung’s R95H is priced below both at the same size, and LG is said to come in $1,000 below Hisense at 100 inches. The result is a market in which RGB backlighting is no longer confined entirely to show-floor fantasy, even if it is still some way from mass-market territory.

For most people, the smartest approach is to ignore the placard and ask about the things that affect day-to-day viewing: full-screen brightness, the exact dimming-zone count for the size on sale and whether the set supports the HDR formats it needs without a promised software update. That is a more reliable guide than any of the new RGB labels, which are mostly variations on an LCD theme. Sony’s eventual True RGB launch may well add another acronym to the pile, but the question for buyers will stay the same: how does the television actually look in the room where it will be used?
