Despite promising high brightness and colour range, RGB LED TVs struggle with colour accuracy, off-axis viewing, and market competition, signalling a shift in the future of premium TV design towards refined OLED and mini-LED technologies.
RGB LED televisions promised a rare combination: the brightness of the best backlit sets and a colour gamut that could challenge anything on the market. On paper, that made them look like the next major step in premium TV design. In practice, the technology is proving harder to tame. After testing several recent models, PCMag’s reviewer says the gains in measured colour and luminance do not translate as cleanly to everyday viewing as the numbers suggest. OLED still delivers the more convincing picture, while advanced mini-LED and quantum-dot sets have narrowed the gap enough to make RGB LED feel less essential.
The core distinction lies in how these displays create light. OLED is self-emissive, so each pixel produces its own light and can shut off completely for true black levels and precise contrast. Conventional LED and QLED televisions, by contrast, rely on an LCD layer lit from behind, often using mini-LED backlights and quantum dots to improve brightness and colour. RGB LED takes that backlight concept further by using red, green and blue LEDs, which can raise colour volume on test patterns and push peak brightness higher than OLED. Tom’s Guide and What Hi-Fi both note that this gives RGB-based sets obvious technical appeal, especially in very bright rooms, but also leaves them dependent on complex processing and local dimming to avoid visible artefacts.
That is where the enthusiasm begins to fray. PCMag’s measurements show RGB LED televisions scoring strongly on colour coverage, with Samsung’s R95H delivering one of the widest gamuts the reviewer has recorded. Yet the same review argues that those figures are most impressive on simple test fields, not in film or television content with mixed colours and fine detail. To prevent colour bloom, the sets appear to fall back towards neutral white lighting when adjacent hues might conflict, which reduces the very saturation advantage that makes the format look so promising in laboratory conditions.
The issue becomes more obvious in real scenes. According to the review, RGB LED sets can show a more noticeable halo than conventional mini-LED TVs, and that haze worsens as the viewer moves off-axis. In side-view seating, the picture can lose saturation and gain a washed-out cast within a relatively small angle. That is a significant weakness in a category meant to compete at the premium end, where large screens often have to serve wide living rooms and family spaces. OLED retains an advantage here because its per-pixel control largely avoids blooming and keeps colour and contrast more stable from the side.
The other challenge is that RGB LED no longer appears unique. TCL’s newer SQD-Mini LED sets, including the QM8L, show that traditional mini-LED plus improved quantum-dot engineering can reach very high brightness and colour performance without the same compromises. Tom’s Guide says the QM8L approaches the best RGB LED figures while remaining far cheaper than the most extreme flagship RGB models. That matters because the most persuasive RGB LED televisions so far have also been among the most expensive, limiting them to a tiny slice of the market.
For that reason, OLED remains the benchmark for picture quality rather than the brightest backlight format. Industry guides from Tom’s Guide, Crutchfield and What Hi-Fi all point to the same conclusion: OLED is still the strongest option for contrast, black level and consistency across angles, while LED-based sets win on brightness, screen size and, often, price. Even where RGB LED and SQD-Mini LED now rival OLED on certain measurements, they do not yet match its overall balance. PCMag’s view is that the technology may improve, but for now the future of premium TV still looks more like refined OLED than RGB LED.
