Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra emerges as a more comprehensive yet lighter alternative to Apple’s foldable, featuring superior cameras, productivity features, and a traditional book-style layout, potentially redefining the foldable market.
Apple’s first foldable has given the market a credible new rival, but it is the Galaxy Z Fold 8 that it most closely challenges. On paper, the match-up is strikingly direct: the two devices share a compact, wide-format design, both use 7.6-inch foldable displays, and both are pitched at buyers who want a large-screen phone that still folds down into a pocketable device. SamMobile notes that the US prices are close as well, with only $100 separating them.
That similarity is why Samsung’s larger foldable still stands apart. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is built around a more traditional book-style shape, with an 8-inch inner display and a 6.5-inch cover screen. According to SamMobile, that layout is better suited to apps built around vertical scrolling, such as social feeds, email and web browsing, because it offers more room in portrait orientation without requiring the user to rotate the handset as often.
The Ultra’s camera system is also in a different class. SamMobile says it adds a dedicated 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, alongside a 200MP main camera and a 50MP ultrawide sensor. By contrast, the standard Fold 8 and Apple’s foldable both rely on dual-camera setups, with Apple using cropping for zoom rather than a separate telephoto module. That does not guarantee better images in every situation, but it does give Samsung more flexibility at the hardware level.
There is also a clear premium in engineering. Despite its larger screens and additional camera, the Fold 8 Ultra is lighter and thinner than Apple’s device, weighing 215g against 254g and measuring 8.9mm folded and 4.1mm unfolded. SamMobile also points to a 5,000mAh battery, support for Samsung DeX, reverse wireless charging, split-screen multitasking for three apps, and a choice of biometric options. Android Central adds that Samsung’s foldable software remains more advanced for productivity use, while Apple’s first model is more limited in multitasking.
Apple does have advantages. SamMobile says the iPhone Duo offers IP68 resistance, stylus support, an under-display camera and a finish designed to reduce reflections. The company also claims longer battery life, while the broader comparison published by SamMobile says the device is a strong debut. Even so, the market position is unchanged: Apple’s foldable is the direct rival to Samsung’s standard Fold 8, not the Ultra. For buyers who want the biggest Samsung foldable with the most capable cameras and the better productivity layout, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra remains the more complete answer.
