Samsung’s upcoming smart glasses are set to outperform Meta’s Ray-Ban Gen 2 in battery life, signalling a new competitive edge driven by software optimisation and design innovations.
Samsung’s push into smart glasses is starting to look like a direct challenge to Meta’s Ray-Ban line, and battery life is the clearest point of comparison. SlashGear reports that Samsung’s upcoming glasses, shown at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, are rated for up to 9 hours on a charge, edging past the 8-hour figure Meta gives for the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. Samsung also says that runtime should hold up under active use, including Gemini Live, music, notifications and video recording across a day.
The charging case is another area where Samsung appears to have an advantage. According to SlashGear, the case adds seven full recharges, compared with Meta’s case, which is rated for about 48 hours of extra power, or roughly six full charges. That difference may matter more than the headline battery figure for users who expect to wear the glasses throughout the day and top up intermittently.
The broader context is that Meta has already made meaningful gains with its second-generation Ray-Ban glasses. Android Central, Tom’s Guide and Gadgets360 report that the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 models offer up to 8 hours of battery life, a 12-megapixel camera, 3K video recording and support for Android and iPhone through the Meta AI app. Tom’s Guide also notes that the new model is slightly lighter than the first generation and keeps the same basic frame styles, while Meta’s earlier pair was widely criticised for having limited endurance.
Even so, the battery comparison may not come down to hardware alone. SlashGear suggests both products rely on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip, which points to optimisation as the likely reason Samsung believes it can squeeze out more life from similar components. That would make software efficiency, not just battery size, the key battleground in a category where all-day use is becoming the minimum expectation rather than a bonus.
