The latest smartwatch battle see-saws between health sensing accuracy and GPS precision, as Apple and Google position their devices for health-conscious and tech-savvy consumers, with platform compatibility still a critical factor.
The choice between the Apple Watch Series 12 and the Google Pixel Watch 5 still begins with the phone in your pocket. Apple’s new watch works only with iPhone, while Google’s latest wearable is built for Android, so platform compatibility is the first and most decisive filter. Beyond that, the two watches now compete much more directly on health tracking, navigation and battery life, with both companies making strong claims about accuracy.
Apple says the Series 12 has the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable, based on a study involving more than 1,000 participants. The watch uses a new Health Sensing System that combines optical and electrical heart sensors with larger, more efficient LEDs, and it reads heart rate every five seconds. Apple also says the updated system improves HRV measurements, which should give users a fuller view of recovery and stress.
Google is making a different case for the Pixel Watch 5. The company says its latest model offers its most accurate GPS route tracking yet, using dual-band positioning, machine-learning corrections and map data to improve precision in difficult urban areas. Google says testing across more than 4,000 miles showed better route accuracy than leading rivals, and that the system is designed to hold its line even between tall buildings or on tree-lined routes.
Battery life is another clear divider. Apple still rates the Series 12 at up to 24 hours, which is unchanged from the previous generation, though fast charging should add roughly 12 hours from a 15-minute top-up. Google claims up to 40 hours for the Pixel Watch 5, and independent testing cited by Trusted Reviews suggests the larger model can go even further. The Pixel Watch also charges quickly, with Google saying a 15-minute charge can yield around 40 hours of use.
The software split is equally important. Apple’s S11 chip powers new Audio Intelligence functions, including Sound Recognition, Live Rewind and Siri Recap. Google counters with Gemini Intelligence, which brings a faster assistant experience and feeds into Google Health Coach for subscribers. At £369 for both watches, the decision is less about price than ecosystem and priorities: Apple appears to be pushing health sensing, while Google is leaning on location accuracy, assistant features and endurance.
